HillyTown OFFStage at SPACE Part 2 (Tomorrow!) + Stuff Tonight

Last week was incredible , starting with the loudest, most intense band possible (Haru Bangs) was absolutely the right idea. See for yourself in a couple weeks when [dog] and [pony] debut the first episodes of their HillyTown Presents concert video series.

In the meantime, let’s keep things moving with the shows. Round 2 of HillyTown OFFStage is tomorrow! 7pm, free, all ages, with free pizza (in very limited supply) so get there early. Check out the poster!

HillyTown OFFStage @ SPACE Aug. 12, 2009 - poster by Kris Johnsen / Emblem Studio

This poster was very generously designed and printed by Kris Johnsen / Emblem Studio.

Tomorrow’s show will start with Jesse Pilgrim (fun fact: Derek Gierhan, drummer for Haru Bangs, returns to OFFStage this week to keep the beat for Jesse! – get a cool video preview courtesy the kind gents at [d]&[p]), followed by Dan Wholey of Boston collective Earth People Orchestra (and friends), and headlining are Panda Bandits. Who, you ask? Well, last time they appeared onstage in Portland (at SPACE, for Johnny Cash Night), they looked like this. I’ve heard they have some surprises in store for tomorrow.

Read on for tonight…

It’s Like The Wild West Out Here. Flyer Wars.

artsdistrict-flyers

The Portland Daily Sun has as its lead story the breaking news about how it’s hard to get your event flyers noticed in Portland. The above photo (taken last Spring when I was visiting Portland before moving here, I remember noticing how crowded the community boards were with concert announcements) gives you an idea of how the limited poster real estate is used. The most important piece of information in the article that I can see is the news that there are plans to replace the rusted staple-covered community boards around town some time this year. Definitely good news for those of us who are used to trying to staple a poster to them only to have the staples not reach the wood!

Lately there have been more and more concert posters showing up on telephone poles, random walls, and other places where they probably shouldn’t be. Usually it’s not the venues and promoters that make oversized, full color posters utilizing these alternative spaces: it’s the diy house shows, the burlesque groups, and the younger bands who don’t feel like there’s room for their promotion on the community boards. When large venues can keep pumping out all the large color posters they want to cover up anything that stands in your way, why bother competing? The article addresses this issue in terms of safety concerns as well as reminding people of the potential fines associated with flyering in unauthorized places.

I’ve suggested in recent months that Portland could use one highly visible, managed area for promotion where everybody can submit their poster and be sure that it will continue to be available until their event has passed. How exactly this can happen, where, and who would be responsible for it is very much the question, but I can only assume this is sort of the “Camp David” idea (which doesn’t get explained at all) mentioned in the Sun article.

It’s nice that Spencer mentions some sort of promoter discussion about the issue, but why not suggest alternatives up front in the article? Here are my ideas:

- Use smaller flyers. Covering up and tearing down large flyers and posters will only create tension and get your flyer covered up again. Instead, use the space creatively. Make a smaller flyer and place it in the negative space on one of those large flyers if there’s no free room on the board. I typically put 2-to-3 flyers on a letter-sized paper and try not to go much bigger than that for use on the the community boards. That way they’re small enough that I can always find some sort of space to place them without being forced to cover up other people’s work.
- Make great screenprinted posters and ask local businesses to put them up in their windows. They’ll stay up longer and not risk being covered up. There are lots of great coffee shops and stores that are happy to help out.
- Promote shows online. Send your show listings to hello@hillytown.com as well as to the local papers and radio stations.
- Use handbills and promote directly. Let’s face it, not everybody pays that much attention to the cluttered community boards around town. Your promotion will be much more effective if you interact with your potential audience face-to-face. Go out to concerts and hand out small flyers, make sure you leave some at the venue where you event will be, and just generally put the word out there.

I’d love to hear more thoughts on this issue, including your own ideas for promotion. Finally, let’s not forget one issue that the Sun article didn’t even touch: all the paper wasted. Any suggestions?

First Friday Roundup, KAHBANG Ticket Contest!, OFFStage Photos

The Gay Blades - photo by Lucia HolmNext week is the big KAHBANG Music Fest in Bangor, Maine. Thanks to one of the bands playing, The Gay Blades, I have two passes to give away to the day-long festival (also featuring Matt & Kim, Ra Ra Riot, Ida Maria, Sex, Royal Bangs, and more)! All you have to do to enter is email hello@hillytown.com (with the subject TGB4N!) and tell me why you want to see The Gay Blades. I’ve provided the photo of the duo (the handsome Clark Westfield and Puppy Mills make up the band) at right for inspiration. The lucky winner will be announced next Wednesday here on HillyTown.com. More about The Gay Blades (video, tour dates, and a new mp3) at the end of this post, after the jump.

On to the roundup! Being First Friday, there’s a lot of art to be seen around town. Get out early if you actually want to get to see some of the great work debuting tonight, or if you’re just in it for the free wine and cheese. If it’s really the work you’re interested in, it may be better to let the crowds do their thing tonight and stop by the galleries next week some time, when you don’t have to throw elbows to get a good look at that hot new exhibit.

Word is that Tower Of Song IS happening tonight, though maybe not from the usual window. Close though, perhaps. I’d bet that some flyers with details will pop up around town today.

On Sunday night, the 48 Hour Music Fest returns to SPACE Gallery in the form of the documentary directed by Dave Camlin. It’s really funny to play “spot your friends” in the concert portion of the film.

In concert-announcement news, it looks like a Sufjan Stevens show crept up while nobody was looking (or, rather, just hasn’t been officially announced yet), and the LL Bean free concert series in Freeport is still going, with Dar Williams this weekend, the Wallflowers next week, and more acts through September 6. The HillyTown OFFStage @SPACE free, all ages, weekly concert series kicked off this week with Haru Bangs, Theodore Treehouse, and BOXY. Thanks to all the bands, the people who came out, and Otto for the pizza! A few photos:

Neko Case Photos

NEKO-CASE-PORTCITYMUSICHALL

Neko Case played a great set to an enthusiastic (and very, very warm) sold out crowd last night at Port City Music Hall. Opener Lucy Wainwright Roche – joined by Neko collaborator Kelly Hogan for part of the set – got the crowd warmed up with amusing banter between songs (for the record, I enjoyed the new song about Coney Island). Check out the full exclusive photo gallery here.

The excellent poster for this show was created by Tim Burns, whose band Phantom Buffalo will be teaming up with Computer At Sea on the 19th for a special performance at OFFStage as Phantom Computers.

Neko Case Tonight!

I will see 659 of your smiling faces at Port City Music Hall tonight for the sold out Neko Case show! Here’s her recent appearance on Letterman, doing “This Tornado Loves You.”

This past weekend, Case played the All Points West Festival. Looks like it was a pretty great time.
