Who OLAS When Sunday, December 6, 2009 9:00pm - $5 suggested donation / beer and wine available - All Ages Where The Pepperclub (map) 78 Middle Street Portland, ME, USA 04101 Other InfoHeavily influenced by Andalusian Flamenco and Arabic folk music, translated through a blend of American folk, rock, Arabic, and Afro-Cuban sounds, OLAS is an original, all acoustic mash-up of very raw and passionate music and dance, complete with songs sung in Spanish, original, non-traditional dance choreography, and traditional instruments such as the cajon, oud, ney and guitar. OLAS creates, congregates and plays for the love of playing. That's it. The musicians of OLAS come from a rich and diverse musical scene based in Portland, Maine. Chriss Sutherland and Tom Kovacevic hail from Cerberus Shoal and Fire on Fire, Dylan Blanchard from Portland’s premier salsa band Grupo Esperanza, and Leif Sherman Curtis from Conifer, who has released two records on Important Records. Dancers Lindsey Bourassa and Megan Keogh come from an eclectic dance background that includes ballet, modern, jazz, salsa, and flamenco. And palmeras Molly Angie and Anna Trunzo are local artists from Portland, ME who have spent the past year learning and performing the palmas rhythms inherent to the music of OLAS. Tower Of Song Fest, What’s Left? Some Sorta Roundup

I tried to get photos and interviews for all 9 acts performing at tomorrow’s Tower Of Song Festival (Saturday, May 23) and definitely came close, though a couple didn’t quite get finished. Below is a photo of the band that will close out the festival, Spencer And The School Spirit Mafia, taken at the incredible Temptations Vs. Supremes Clash Of The Titans the other night.

Additionally, Chriss Sutherland was totally cooperative but our schedules just didn’t work out to do a photo shoot. The photo below is from an outdoor concert last summer. Chriss has a new album called Worried Love, available now from Peapod Recordings. He plays the Tower Of Song Festival second, at 12:35.

Since I’m skipping the usual HillyTown Roundup this week in lieu of the Tower Of Song Fest coverage, here are just a few other shows of note happening this weekend:

Saturday night @ SPACE: Honey Clouds CD Release show.
Saturday night @ Empire: The Leftovers CD Release show.
Saturday night @ Strange Maine: The Scrapes final show EVER, like, for reals.
Monday (Memorial Day) @ Bubba’s: Shell Shag return for a free fuzzy punk fun feel good killer show. Just show up.

As a final treat, since Dilly Dilly, Sontiago, and Lady Lamb The Beekeeper are all going to be performing at the Tower Of Song Fest, here’s a shot of their collaborative alter-ego, Hairy Brass Knuckles. You may remember them from this.
