Who dilly dilly When Saturday, October 15, 2011 8:00pm - $8 adv/ $10 dos / $18 adv - 18+ Where Port City Music Hall (map) Portland, ME, USA 04101 Other InfoCome on out and welcome back dilly dilly after her time in Los Angeles and abroad. Backed by a live band, this will be a performance you won't want to miss.

dilly dilly is Erin Olivia Davidson, a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter from Portland, Maine. Erin gained a love for music in 1992 at the ripe, young age of fourteen when her sister gave her the first guitar she would ever play. The guitar once belonged to their mother. Erin quickly began to learn how to play with help from chord books and guitar tabs on the internet and within the year she was able to at least strum a g-chord.
In 1993, she and her high school chums started the band Choda, and Erin soon took up playing the bass. The band went through some changes and evolved into the live project known as Red Light City. After six years the band ran into troubles, and Erin took her heart and bass guitar and wandered the streets of Portland pondering her next move. Ok, well, she was just walking home, but you understand.

In the winter of 1999, Chriss Sutherland from the band Cerberus Shoal heard Erin was sans band. After conversing with his band mates, Chriss called Erin to see if she would like to come hang out and maybe play music. Much obliged, Erin went to their house. They all got along quite nicely and everyone agreed to give it a go as the new line-up of Cerberus Shoal.

Throughout Erin's time with Cerberus Shoal, the band was constantly experimenting with different instruments and styles of music. Erin quickly learned and began playing multiple instruments such as the musical saw, toy keyboards, toy accordion, trumpet, electric guitar, banjo, bouzouki, various percussion instruments such as drums, tympani, marimba and whatever other random toy and real instruments she could get her hands on and make sound with.

Cerberus Shoal took an abrupt hiatus in the winter of 2005 after her 13th tour with the band during which Erin purchased her first ukulele. Alone again, Erin was left to wander with her heart set on doing something she had always wanted to do: DANCE! No, wait, embark on a solo project and the ukulele she bought was, in her mind, an instrument that further motivated this idea.

Erin recorded her first solo EP, akidleadivy, under the guise of dilly dilly and soon hit the road for her first solo tour. She continued to do musical projects abound, solo and collaborating with other artists.

Throughout the years, Erin has worked with many artists in many forms. She has recorded instruments and vocals on songs with artists and bands, made guest appearances at live shows, collaborated on and co-written songs, joined side project bands and released split releases with artists such as Sontiago, Moshe, Bullyclub, Sun City Girls, Guapo, The Magic Carpathians, Herman Dune, Radar Tradar, Soft-ex, Filkoe 176, Seekonk and An Evening With...Spencer and the School Spirit Mafia. Not to mention a two-month tour in the backing band for Sage Francis with Alias and Tom Inhaler with Buddy Wakefield, Alias and Buck 65 as support.

After this tour, Erin settled down to focus and has now finished writing, arranging and recording her first large production album, 'of art and intention'. The album involves all of the previous instruments mentioned and includes the use of the MPC, or Midi Processing Center, which uses drum breaks and samples that are chopped up and sequenced as a basis for the album's songs.

She has also been focusing on remixing other artist material. One notable occasion of this was a remix contest for the Dan Le Sac vs. Scoobius Pip ( Strange Famous Records - Sage Francis) song 'First Time we Met Musik'. Erin took home the winning prize for her composition.

In the near future, Erin plans on spending her time writing and focusing on music.See More

The March First Friday is here, and though I’ll probably miss most of the fun due to other obligations, there’s enough good stuff happening in Portland that I just have to share.

For the first time, Eternal Otter Records will be opening their Headquarters at the Building Of Song location (142 High St, Suite 513) and will be open every friday from 11am-4pm. This week they will be followed by a Building Of Song concert featuring Dominic Lavoie (of The Lucid – they’ve shortened their name from Dominic & The Lucid), Meghan Yates & the Reverie Machine, and Matt Lajoie (of Cursillistas).

At SPACE Gallery, Greg Davis‘ Ocean Mind exhibit/sound installation kicks off, followed by a performance/concert at 9pm.

The Dooryard debuts an exciting group show, Monsters And Robots “No Humans, No Masters” that – from the looks of what I saw the other day while the artists were putting it up – is not to be missed.

Geno’s turns art gallery again, this time with Michael Batchelder’s music photos (15% of sales go to the musicians in the photos). The exhibit is followed by a concert with Aok Suicide Forest, Bora, and Roadshow (from Boston).

As if I need to mention it, the 48 Hour Music Fest is Saturday. It’ll probably be huge again, rightfully so (though somehow there are 3 other simultaneous attractive shows that night). Check out the PHX article if you haven’t seen it yet and get tickets/show up early if you want to witness the randomness.

Last Friday (February 26) at the Hogfarm Annex in Biddeford, Dilly Dilly and Sontiago played their last show as a duo in Maine before Dilly Dilly left on her great trip west. She’s moving to LA via an epic drive with pal Becca Redman, and you can follow their adventures (and those of their not-always-trusty-steed, No Sexy) right here. At the moment they’re apparently camping in Abilene State Park, TX. We hope their journey goes well and that Erin (Dilly) finds great success out on the west coast.

Read on for photos from the show, which also included Lady Lamb The Beekeeper (and thus a surprise return of Hairy Brass Knuckles, a year later!) and the excellent Pearl And The Beard from Brooklyn, NY. Fun fact: Jocelyn from Pearl And The Beard actually used a pair of the Ferdinand-created (for DraculaZombieUSA‘s Maine debut) hairy brass knuckles, as you’ll see below. Photos by Bryan Bruchman.

By the way, I’ve been wondering for a minute: what happened to the top part of the Arts District flyer board in Congress Square? Remember when it looked like this?

Get a preview this weekend, and then don’t miss her opening slot for Pink Mountaintops at SPACE Gallery on June 3. For extra fun, check her out in the Kim Gordon role at the Sonic Youth vs. Pixies Clash Of The Titans the night before at Empire.

What was the most unusual place you’ve ever played music in?
I’ll tell you about the most unusual think that’s ever happened at a show.

Cerberus Shoal had just finished setting up for a show at KSET in Slovenia. Chriss, Tim and I were still on the stage messing around on our instruments when all of a sudden the stage started shifting back and forth. Tim had just jumped off the stage so I thought it was his heavy feet… but seconds later we were told to leave bacause we’d just experienced an earth quake! My first ever… a 3.1!

What is the most mysterious album you own? (i.e. you don’t know anything about the musicians’ identities)
I pretty much have a good grip on the identities of the cd’s I own… but my most favorite and weirdest cd is a cd called Indiependent by Mission Man. He was a fan of mine on My Space and I first met him on the Sage Francis tour where he handed my this amazingly strange album. The only way I can describe it to you is by saying it’s the most honest album I’ve ever listened to. EVER.

Describe your favorite sound not made by a musical instrument.
This is kind of cheesy, but I’m a whistle/ bird call kinda person. I love the trills and songs that come from these amazing little flying creatures. I suppose it’s the little things that keep me going.

What do you think happens when you get too far from your house?
The further I get, the more I feel like I’m living life. I love touring and being out of my home comfort zone. Finding a new comfort in first impressions and a different story every day. It’s the hardest/ easiest thing i’ve ever done in my life. This is what happens. Viva la road!

Yes, really.
Review and photos by Dilly Dilly, edited by Nancy Cartonio.

Check out the full photo gallery here.

Picture it… United States Of America, 1989. The girls all had poof bangs, stirrup pants and jellies. The guys all had asymmetrical lines shaved into the sides of their heads, hammer pants and hyper-color shirts. Boom boxes blasted from driveways all across this fine continent or ours, whilst we choreographed dance moves we would show to the world, as soon as we were accepted on Star Search, where Ed McMahon would surely claim us as the next big thing. The music we would dance to? Why, New Kids On The Block, of course.

The guys either wanted to be them or they hated them with a passion. The girls just wanted to be with them and O! How we could scream it from the top of our lungs. We all had our favorite one. Was it the ever-elusive shy guy, Jon Knight, or his gorgeous outspoken brother, Jordan? Maybe it was the Rebel with ripped jeans sporting a Boston Red Sox hat, Donnie Wahlburg? Perhaps it was Donny Wood and all his charm? And then there was Joey McIntyre, the baby who was such a pretty boy with an even more pretty voice.

Read on after the jump…

Whomever you chose, their likeness was inevitably plastered all over your bedroom wall or locker. Some even went as far as to collect the dolls, pins, stickers, patches, trapper keepers and what ever else they could lay their hands on. They were the gods of merch. Us ladies prayed to them and swooned all over them through the best and worst of our wonder years.

So here we are twenty years later. All those girls grown to be fine up-standing citizens of the world. Workers, mothers and lovers abound. All doing the things real adults should be doing. What happens when you throw a bunch of late twenties/early thirties folks (and their offspring) down memory lane, with nothing to hold on to but a nostalgic dream of the boys our underdeveloped minds latched on to so long ago? I’ll tell you what. The same exact thing that happened twenty years ago.

There were plenty “I heart NKOTB” shirts to be had. The screaming reached to db levels I’ve only experienced standing in front of a wall of Marshall stacks cranked to eleven. Bright florescent poster board signs were begging for the boys to come to Gritty McDuff’s post show or for random acts of copulation. My favorite had to be the “Lesbians heart Joey” sign. YES. One lady even threw her g-string, with a picture of Jordan, on stage (more on that to come). Yes, I was profoundly proud of my fellow NKOTB fans. They really went for it like it was going out of style.

The show itself was nothing less then spectacular. The production was over the top, complete with a three-tiered stage with stairs down the center and a rising platform behind, a live four-piece band, dancers, and full use of the Jumbo Tron. They even placed a round stage at the back of the Civic Center with a baby grand piano. This stage spun around, lifted up and smoked with a red light illuminating its underbelly when it inevitably rose from the depths. Half way through their two hour long set, they all ran back for a few songs and pranced around for the folks with the over-priced nose bleed seats. So sweet.

The boys were really something else. None of them looked half as bad as I’d assumed they would. Here’s to aging gracefully. They didn’t look worse for the wear and, actually, were still quite handsome. Every song had its full production moves, with a costume change per every other song. And there was way more live singing than I had expected.

They played all the hits like You Got It (The Right Stuff), Please Don’t Go Girl, I’ll Be Loving You (Forever), Tonight, and My Favorite Girl. They also whipped out some new hits like Click, Click, Click and Summer time (you know… that hit that came out last year? Yeah, me neither.). They even sang some of their solo songs. Donnie did a version of Cover Girl complete with him playing electric guitar. Joey did a couple of sexy somber songs. The cherry on top was Jordan performing one of his solo songs, on the top tier, all dressed in white, with a fan blowing on him, shirt unbuttoned all the way and flapping in the wind (see photos!) Wow.

Another shining moment was when the undies were tossed onto the stage. Donnie picked them up and professed the urge to sniff them. All of a sudden, the rest of the boys started chanting “sniff….sniff…sniff…”. I’m sure he just couldn’t contain himself when he asked the girl to turn her back for three seconds, then proceeded to grab a quick whiff before handing them off to Jordan, stating he half expected them to smell like clam chowder! That may have been about the time I lost it.

The end of the show I likened to the grand finale on the Fourth Of July. For their encore songs, they came out dressed in Celtics jerseys with Maine printed across the front. They sang Step By Step and Hanging Tough with the words to We Will Rock You spattered in there. The whole shebang finished nicely with them running and jumping off the main stage while confetti launchers spit loads of green and silver paper slivers all over the audience. A most proper ending to this grandiose pop show.

By that point, my senses had been bombarded with so much stimulation, I felt the price of admission was well worth it. I wanted a show and that’s most certainly what I got, in all it’s glory. Straight up? If you hated them twenty years ago, this show would not have changed your feelings towards them. If you loved them twenty years ago, you would have been screaming with the best of us. I guess the boy bands never die, they just lie dormant until the next round of reunion tours. And they will certainly remain packed with hope and butterflies from all ladies, big and small, old and new. I’m glad there is, was and always will be one constant thing we can relate to on this planet. Music. Good or bad.

NKOTB 4 EVA
