First order of business: you still have about 5 hours to get your entry in for the KahBang tickets giveaway! Do it now! The contest will end and winners will be picked at about 4pm today. After that you’ll have to purchase tickets here.

In other festival news, the full Nateva schedule has been announced. The Port City Music Hall Stage looks to be the hangout spot, starting early on Thursday July 1 (before the rest of the festival) and going very late every night. For those of you looking for all that amazing indie rock happening, you’ll want to shuffle between the two main stages on Friday and Saturday to catch (in order) Magic Magic, The Felice Brothers, Passion Pit, Ghostland Observatory, Brenda, Drive-By Truckers, She & Him, Grizzly Bear, and The Flaming Lips. I might suggest capping Saturday night off (if you’re left with any energy) by partying with the excellent Toubab Krewe on the Barn Stage. Get your weekend and day passes ($89 each) here.

Now, on to tonight’s Art Walk and happenings! Most events happen between 5-8pm:

Bayside Bowl opens this evening! Check out the new bowling alley/bar/restaurant/music venue in the Bayside neighborhood. Next Saturday’s Marie Stella cd release show will be your first chance to see a concert there.
At Mayo Street, Sara Wilmot and Arthur Fink are showing photos in an exhibit entitled Visual Passion. Tango Mucho Labia will perform.
At Corduroy, 13 year-old Portland proto hipster Leander Johnson celebrates a tri-unveiling of a photo exhibit, a 1966-themed zine, and an album created with the help of Justin Taylor and Ian Paige. The trio will perform a special live ambient electronic score.
Two new exhibits are debuting at SPACE Gallery tonight. Both looked great when I stopped in for a sneak peak, and I highly recommend spending some time checking them out.
Local Sprouts Cafe and the Bomb Diggity Bakery will open their doors from 5-11pm and host a food-inspired art exhibit (which includes two of the food-themed SPACE Gallery posters created by myself and Kris Johnsen) along with performances by the Potato Pickers, Lady Zen, D. Gross, Jazz, Peter Hazen, Heidi Vierthaler and more.
Two Point Gallery opens with Honey Cling To Me: The Bear Paintings by Derek Jackson.
Portland Pins finds a new home at The Green Hand Book Store [661 Congress, Portland]!

For music there’s Jakob Battick performing solo at Slainte and the interesting combination of Over A Cardboard Sea, Hessian, and Batshelter at Geno’s. Looking to dance? Hit Port City for a free party with Atomik and The Filth at 9pm!

First Friday!

I know, I’m usually so good about providing a heaping list of First Friday Art Walk recommendations. This week, however, with such an overwhelming number of great options for your eyes and ears, to do it any justice would require a full day of link-gathering and writing, which I just didn’t have! This is partially due to my own participation – I’ll have 4 new photos from South By Southwest up at Mayo Street Arts tonight (as well as other work and open studios!). My suggestion is to just pick one end of town and work your way through, with great happenings on both ends, it’s hard to pick just one event/exhibit. Have fun!

Psst. Wolf Parade show at Port City was announced this morning! Tickets on sale April 9th at 10 am!

Art Walk, Phoenix Best, DRUMS!

I’m on my way out the door, but there’s so much going on today that I’d hate to just not mention anything… of course you know it’s First Friday, which means that just about every store front and gallery in town will be open and exhibit some sort of art. Here are some hilights:

Stop by Fuller Glass Studio on Munjoy Hill to check out work from Ponomo and others.
Two Point Gallery has a new 6-artist show opening called “Constant Urban Influence.”
Geno’s is showing work from Nathan Fogg & Justin Mershimer.
Sanctuary Tattoo has a metal-themed show from a variety of artists in various mediums.
At HOPE.GATE.WAY (185 High Street), Tower/Building Of Song’s Alicia Ines Sampson shows “I sail oceans in maps,” selected works from 2003 to the present.

When you’ve had your fill of wine, cheese, and visual art, come by SPACE Gallery for Drum Swamp (sponsored by the Drum Shop), a 20+ drummer collaboration. Should be pretty epic. That starts at 8pm, will last about an hour, and is free.

Also, the Portland Phoenix Best ’10 nominations are in, and now it’s time to vote for your favorites! HillyTown was nominated in the category of Best Blog, so vote for us! (note: Food blogs have their own, separate category).

First Friday Art Walk! (Feat. The Return Of The Dooryard)

Sure, there are lots of galleries and art spaces in Portland, but for tonight’s First Friday Art Walk, why not head off the Congress Street path a bit and check out a couple less-conventional spots?

The DoorYard (108 High Street, at Spring) will be celebrating its first Open Studio/Art Walk exhibit in way too long. It’s a multimedia installation and from what I’ve heard from a few of the artists/collective members, it sounds pretty interesting. Plus, there will apparently be cookies.

Down at The Apohadion (107 Hanover Street), Your Future Landlords (Justin Woollard, Doug Milliken, and SK Green) will be showing “nearly 200 drunken, obscene, often offensive but always ridiculous cartoons.” There will also be some sort of musical/art/ridiculous performance.

For more wine-and-cheese types of art happenings tonight (and everything in between), peruse the FFAW listings. Bundle up.

The weekend is full of great events around town (and outside Portland as well) so find something fun. For Saturday night, I highly recommend helping our friend Knaughty Sarah celebrate her birthday at Geno’s (though the other options for the night are really awesome as well)!
