They paired up for one track on his Portland-based Anticon labelmate Alias’ last album, Resurgam, and now Alias has returned the favor and remixed the track “One Rose” off Why?’s new Eskimo Snow album. Check it out (along with more Why? goodies) over at RCRD LBL. Wesley Hartley, of Dead End Armory (who are, I believe, on hiatus), has quietly released a free, 10-song solo acoustic album through his art website. The album, Quiver Spoked Largely Eyed, can be downloaded (one track at a time unless you upgrade your account) from here. Catch him live at SPACE Gallery in December opening for AA Bondy or at the Dog and Pony Show DVD release show!
For all my talk about the Apohadion, last night was the first time I actually made it down to a show there. The space is great, and reminds me of other diy venues I’ve seen, especially Death By Audio in Brooklyn (but that might be the checkered floor more than anything else – though both spaces also serve as practice rooms, recording studios, and FX pedal workshops…). Read on… It was just yesterday that Peapod Recordings officially released Brown Bird‘s excellent new (and more upbeat than some may have expected) album, The Devil Dancing, which our friends at Dog And Pony featured with this interview at the Friendly Toast in Portsmouth. Just in from the PMF, a meeting tonight regarding a report related to sound that could potentially result in a new city ordinance. Worth checking out (see the pdf linked for details), for those interested (read: club owners, etc.)
The PMF are also having a (members only) talk tomorrow at SPACE Gallery, focusing on home recording techniques. I regret not mentioning this before it happened, but last week’s First Friday Art Walk also marked the grand opening/ribbon-cutting ceremony at The International Cryptozoology Museum, located in the back of the new book store run by Michelle (of Strange Maine Gazette fame), The Green Hand. Here are a few photos from the night. Unfortunately, I missed the ribbon cutting myself, but the museum is a lot of fun and the book store is well-stocked with an interesting selection. Definitely find a few hours to browse both in the near future. By the way, Elephant 6 band Nana Grizol will be in town tomorrow to play The Apohadion. Their album, Ruth (on Orange Twin), is set for a mid-January release (though if you’re impatient the digital version is out there and well worth your time and dollars) and from just a few listens I can already tell that some of these tracks are going to stick around in heavy rotation for a while. Here’s a BV post with an mp3 and videos and all that goodness. Check out a couple videos (of my favorite track on the album) after the jump. Read on…
As mentioned, the DoorYard Art Collective made a grand return to the monthly First Friday Art Walk in Portland with a full installation and open studio experience. If you’ve ever been to the DoorYard before (or Soundpost, or Stillhouse…) you may not recognize it these days, as it’s changed quite a bit. Check out the gallery after the jump for a glimpse of what the artists involved worked up for this occasion. Read on… Jon Donnell kindly sent over this snap of the upcoming Apohadion schedule (the only place to find it is on the wall at the Theatre itself), which includes some shows that are news to me. Check it out! (individual show details linked further down). Sure, there are lots of galleries and art spaces in Portland, but for tonight’s First Friday Art Walk, why not head off the Congress Street path a bit and check out a couple less-conventional spots? The DoorYard (108 High Street, at Spring) will be celebrating its first Open Studio/Art Walk exhibit in way too long. It’s a multimedia installation and from what I’ve heard from a few of the artists/collective members, it sounds pretty interesting. Plus, there will apparently be cookies. Down at The Apohadion (107 Hanover Street), Your Future Landlords (Justin Woollard, Doug Milliken, and SK Green) will be showing “nearly 200 drunken, obscene, often offensive but always ridiculous cartoons.” There will also be some sort of musical/art/ridiculous performance. For more wine-and-cheese types of art happenings tonight (and everything in between), peruse the FFAW listings. Bundle up. The weekend is full of great events around town (and outside Portland as well) so find something fun. For Saturday night, I highly recommend helping our friend Knaughty Sarah celebrate her birthday at Geno’s (though the other options for the night are really awesome as well)! |
