Computer At Sea Tonight, Plus Xylos Early

Hopefully you already know about the big Computer At Sea record (as in vinyl!) release show tonight at Geno’s. Hi Tiger and Power Lines will be on hand to help (CAS’s) Galen Richmond celebrate the release of Palace Of The Lightbulbs.

Looking to get your music fix for synthy pop started a bit early tonight (or still dancing from last night)? Head to Slainte for 8pm, when NYC’s Xylos will play. If any HillyTown readers out there happen to snap some photos at either of these shows, we’d love to see them. Drop a link in the comments or email us!

HillyTown Presented: May 21 Photo Recap

Last Friday, May 21, we had a show at Slainte in Portland that included Kyle Wilson of the Brooklyn band Milagres, Selbyville, and Jakob Battick & Friends (in their last full band show until September). There was a great crowd for this show and all of the performances were spectacular. Check out the photos below!

Show Announcement: HillyTown Presents!

This is the first of a few HillyTown Presents show announcements that I’ll have for the summer!

On Friday, May 21, I’m happy to finally welcome the music of Brooklyn’s Milagres (formerly known at The Secret Life Of Sofia) to Portland, Maine. Lead singer/songwriter Kyle Wilson will be playing solo at Slainte Wine Bar, along with locals Selbyville and Jakob Battick & Friends. It gets started at 9pm and there’s no cover charge. Spread the word!

Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone @ Slainte - Portland, ME - photo by Bryan Bruchman for HillyTown.com

I have to say, I love putting on shows at Slainte Wine Bar. It’s a pretty unassuming little room, but you can do great things there. Audiences love that shows are free, the food is good (and it was half-price on this occasion!), and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable for the performers. While there may not be a top-of-the-line sound system with monitors, the room is small enough that the sound can be managed pretty easily with a little effort. In the end, it’s very much worth it, to have a great show in such an intimate space.

This was definitely the case on our show this Wednesday, which featured two of my own personal favorite local bands: White Light and South China (whose two members have now joined White Light as well, on most occasions). As if that wasn’t enough, the incredible Brooklyn-based experimental folk/jazz duo of Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone brought an onslaught of great sounds from their guitar, viola, and voices. They’ll be down at BUOY in Kittery tonight, and I highly recommend checking them out if you missed this show.

Check out all the photos from this show in the gallery here.

Tonight, TMBG/PCMH News

We had a great time tonight, both at the Phoenix awards show and at our own party at Slainte. The big news of the day, however, is that They Might Be Giants are scheduled to appear at the Port City Music Hall on Friday, June 12! This is great news!

More (including photos from tonight) in the morning. I also have a show review and photos from the Ray LaMontagne show this weekend at Merrill Auditorium to post soon.

HillyTown Party Tonight!

Put the taxes behind you and come out for a great night of music tonight at Slainte. We’ve got locals White Light and South China (who sounded great together on WMPG’s Liberation By Sound yesterday) along with the Brooklyn duo Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone. As always at Slainte (24 Preble St. in downtown Portland, just off Monument Square) the show is free and begins at 9pm! Bonus: half off items on the bar’s food menu (which is surprisingly eclectic and really good – not your typical bar food!) See you there!

Also tonight, just down the street at the Port City Music Hall, the Phoenix will be announcing the winners of their “Best Of 2008″ poll, along with providing free food and some great musical performances. That starts early (7pm) so you could even stop there before out party!

Slainte show lineup - photo by Bryan Bruchman

It’s been an eventful week around here (and it all culminates tomorrow with the big party). The fun started on Sunday at Slainte with Poingly, Eric Hnatow, Rotundo Sealeg, and a room full of dancing maniacs who braved a pretty heavy snowstorm to come out and party.

We had the second official HillyTown.com Presents event at Slainte on Friday, January 30th, 2009, with the help of local party-starter Neon Garden. The show started with a blistering 15-minute set of snotty thrash punk from Ye (listed on the show as Data Entry, but I guess they mutated into a whole new beast on their way to 24 Preble Street), then came two great Brooklyn bands who were actually pretty new to me. HillyTown.com and Neon Garden! + the Roundup (Jan. 25-30)

Last weekend’s double-header at SPACE with the Dead Of Winter show and then Mission Of Burma left me (and probably a lot of people, given how crowded both shows were) pretty wiped out. It’s Friday though, and again the options are plentiful.

HillyTown.com has teamed up with Neon Garden (whose parties at the White Heart regularly make you shake it) to bring you a free show tonight at Slainte with Lady Magma, Pass Kontrol, and a local opener who may or may not be called Data Entry (no, seriously, that may not be who they are, we’ll find out tonight…). Check out the show details here. Come out and say hi!

And now for your weekly roundup! It’s a quickie this time.

Portland-related music (and more) news:

  • Ray LaMontagne announced a show at Merrill Auditorium. The Low Anthem opens. Tickets on sale soon.
  • Portland Photo Works is hosting a Portland-based photo exhibit appropriately titled Port City Show – you can submit your own work to be considered for it.
  • Be careful if you use the Stonewall Kitchen store for free meals – you may want to skip the desert.
  • Edith & Edna on Exchange Street appears to be closed. Anybody know more about this?
  • There’s some sort of new project space at the North Dam Mill in Biddeford, with a music series sponsored by River Tree Arts. I wish I had more details, but they offer little to no info on it. Tonight they feature Dead End Armory and Emilia Dahlin among others, according to the Bollard.

Not Portland-related, but definitely worth knowing about: The Dark Was The Night charity compilation coming out on February 17th is amazing. I highly recommend checking out the preview tracks and picking it up when it’s available.
