Portland Mag On The State Of The State

The cover of the new issue of Portland Monthly features a time-split juxtaposition of The State Theater (pictured above, as seen by myself last year on a trip before moving to Portland) in its last heyday as a functioning venue and in its current dormant state. The article, titled “Who Kidnapped the State Theater” . . . → Read More: Portland Mag On The State Of The State

Opening A New Record Shop? That Sounds Absurd!

There’s a new vinyl-only record shop (LPs & 45s) opening in Portland this week. Check it out this (Black) Friday (November 27) as they open their doors for the first time.

Sounds Absurd has taken over the space at 55 Oak Street that was formerly occupied by Herbs Gully, who shut their doors . . . → Read More: Opening A New Record Shop? That Sounds Absurd!

Bands (and other locals), I WANT Your Spam!

This is just a friendly reminder to the bands out there – I want you to put me on your mailing list. And your press list, if you have one. This is only for bands in Portland, ME or those that play here frequently (and their publicists, labels, etc). So here goes, it’s hello -at- . . . → Read More: Bands (and other locals), I WANT Your Spam!

Photos: Lions + Tigers + Bears at PCMH 11.18.09

Last Wednesday, Port City Music Hall filled up with another huge crowd for a great WCYY-sponsored show loaded with animal-named bands (incredibly, no Wolf bands were involved.) Keeping with the Athens, Georgia theme, Twin Tigers started things off and set the epic, noisy tone for the night. Later on, As Tall As Lions pushed . . . → Read More: Photos: Lions + Tigers + Bears at PCMH 11.18.09

It’s been a very busy week for shows (and still going, with great shows tonight and tomorrow at SPACE) and we’ve got plenty of photos to show for it! On Tuesday, Metric headlined a show at Port City Music Hall. I was really impressed by the openers, a UK band called Band Of Skulls. . . . → Read More: Photos: Port City Music Hall 11.17.09

Figa?

I noticed that the new Figa Restaurant on Congress Street has a sign up and it looks like the interior is coming along nicely, with chairs and other furniture in place… but when is the opening? If you know, please share!

In other food news, the Phoenix recently featured my favorite pizza joint, Otto . . . → Read More: Figa?

TAB The Band Photos

Sometimes you just can’t make it to every show. It’s a great problem to have though, in a city like Portland where music fans often complain a lack of good shows to check out (which is less and less the case lately). On Saturday night (November 14), I was at SPACE Gallery for most . . . → Read More: TAB The Band Photos

Amanda Palmer Photos

It’s been a busy week for music around Portland! In fact, it’s showing no signs of stopping for the foreseeable future, as we’ve got a handful of great national acts coming through in the coming weeks.

Last Thursday, November 12, saw Amanda Palmer (of Dresden Dolls fame) bringing a new opening/backing band in . . . → Read More: Amanda Palmer Photos

Portland Cookie Review: Big Sky Bakery

review by Biscuit Wakefield – please read “Biscuit On Cookies“

Big Sky Bakery Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Walnut Cookie (I purchased mine from the Public Market, but it’s available at the Woodfords location as well) (My apologies, I forgot the price. Again! It was reasonable, though, I remember that. Good cookies are so distracting.) Now that . . . → Read More: Portland Cookie Review: Big Sky Bakery

Photo Recap: Nana Grizol At Apohadion [11.10.09]

For all my talk about the Apohadion, last night was the first time I actually made it down to a show there. The space is great, and reminds me of other diy venues I’ve seen, especially Death By Audio in Brooklyn (but that might be the checkered floor more than anything else – though . . . → Read More: Photo Recap: Nana Grizol At Apohadion [11.10.09]

Brown Bird New Album And Possible Europe Tour

It was just yesterday that Peapod Recordings officially released Brown Bird‘s excellent new (and more upbeat than some may have expected) album, The Devil Dancing, which our friends at Dog And Pony featured with this interview at the Friendly Toast in Portsmouth. Already, the band has some more news. In February, they have the opportunity . . . → Read More: Brown Bird New Album And Possible Europe Tour
