Not A Roundup

goescube-boston

I’m still catching up after being out of town for a week, but last night I saw Goes Cube play a show in Boston as a preview of the awesomeness they’ll be bringing to Empire Dine & Dance tonight in a (unofficial) HillyTown show. Montreal’s Clues headline and Marie Stella opens. Doors at 9pm, 21+, just $6.

If you’re looking for an early show tonight, head to Biddeford at 6pm for the grand opening of the new Hogfarm Studios Annex.

Of course, tomorrow is the big day for Spencer And The School Spirit Mafia, as they’ll be holding their record release show at the Asylum.

Are you getting excited for the month-long HillyTown First Year Birthday Party? I am. Posters and full info on each of the four free, all ages shows at SPACE Gallery will be posted shortly!

P-a-r-t-y

Field Gallery (74 India Street) is celebrating their 3rd birthday today with a party from 5-9pm.

Sorry for the lack of updates over the last week, I was out of town. You were all too busy freaking out over Anvil anyway, right?

Deer Tick Show Cancelled

Sad news, Deer Tick fans, their highly-anticipated show scheduled for this evening at SPACE Gallery has unfortunately been cancelled due to illness (tonsillitis, specifically).

It seems like a lot of people in town were planning to make it out to the show, so where will everybody end up now? Luckily there are a few decent (and free) options for entertainment tonight. Check it out: There’s Gin Circus at Slainte, Putnam Smith at Blue, and over at Empire, Kurt Baker from The Leftovers is debuting a free DJ night called Buzz Electric, featuring 60′s/70′s Rock N’ Roll, Glam, Mod, Power Pop, and Punk.

If you’re willing to travel a bit, Rotundo Sealeg are apparently playing a free show tonight at 7pm at the Auburn Mall Hot Topic. That will almost definitely be worth it.

Exclusive Wilco Photos From Peir Revue

Photographer Jon Donnell was at the big Wilco show at the Maine State Pier this weekend and put together a whole gallery of great shots. Click here to see the full gallery from the show, including opening act Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band. wilco-jondonnell
Thanks to DJ Roy for his help in making this happen!

Wilco (The Show) Roundupish

It’s pretty much inevitable that Wilco will find their way into your day. Even if you’re not going to the big show on the pier, you’ll probably hear it. Or maybe you’ll be trying to buy a cd, rent a movie, or grab some pizza over at 151 Middle Street around 12:30, while Wilco guitarist Nels Cline will be at Bull Moose signing autographs (I’d expect quite a crowd for that). Staying in tonight and live on Munjoy Hill? Open your windows and you’ll likely get a nice loud taste of the show – sound travels around the hill in funny ways.

There’s gotta be something else going on in Portland than this Wilco show though, right? Absolutely.

Apologies for the lack of more detailed roundups these days, but things are getting busy at HT HQ. See you out there (but not at Wilco!).

Some Thursday Updates (Warning: Very Spencer-centric)

Once again, Spencer Albee has a video out promoting a show. Check out the absurd promo video for the As Fast As/Grand Hotel/The Leftovers show this Saturday at Asylum.

That’s not the only thing the former Rusted Overtones member has up his sleeve – to celebrate the release of Spencer And The School Spirit Mafia‘s debut, Candy, Cake, And Ice Cream, the band will play free shows at Bull Moose stores next week before the release show on August 1st.

And that’s not all there is – this week the Fall/Winter ’09 Clash Of The Titans Schedule was announced. There are definitely some interesting battles lined up – some that look good to me are Sex Pistols vs. The Stooges (9/15), SNL vs. Monty Python (9/27), Velvet Underground vs. Portishead (11/3), Interpol vs. The Strokes (11/17), and Jay Z vs. DRE (12/16). These events will continue to be held at Empire Dine & Dance.

In other news (oh right, this does relate…), there have been some changes to the August HillyTown OFFStage Concert Series. Unfortunately (maybe somebody is a little busy?) Sontiago & The School Spirit Mafia won’t be happening at the 8/26 show. White Light will headline that final installment of free music with Blood Warrior and Mark Summers. Cannot Be Stopped were, unfortunately, stopped from touring due to an upcoming cross-country move, so Theodore Treehouse (f/k/a The Cups) will take that slot between Haru Bangs and Boxy (in their first ever performance).

One Way Or Another, You’ll Dance

HUAKS-slaintejuly09

With barely time to catch their breath after a blistering set at their EP release show at Slainte the other night, Huak are back tonight with a DoorYard show at Geno’s. The lineup for tonight has changed in the past few days, with The Grievants canceling their tour and Shabti and Rotundo Sealeg jumping on the bill, which already included new local duo Gin Circus with what will be their first show ever!

Over at SPACE tonight, Chicago’s Occidental Brothers Dance Band International are back. Don’t let the fact that you may not be familiar with the group or even the style of music they play keep you from experiencing this show. Last time was incredible and I’m sure tonight will be just as great. Be ready to dance.
