On Friday night, o’death returned to SPACE Gallery for a sold out show with Brown Bird and if and it. Brown Bird will be back in the area on February 18 with a show at The Oak + The Ax in Biddeford (which is run by Greg from o’death) before heading down to Texas for SXSW in March and on to the West coast. Read on for photos from Friday night! Read on…

Brown Bird + o’death Ticket Contest

Update: Congrats to our contest winner Dorson P. and thanks to everybody who entered! Enjoy the show!

OH HEY. We meant to do this when we posted the Brown Bird interview yesterday, but it got lost in the shuffle. Want to go to the show at SPACE on Friday? Email hello@hillytown.com with the subject line “Brown Bird!” to enter to win a pair of tickets to the show. Contest ends at Noon on Wednesday, January 25 and one randomly selected winner will be notified via email. In the meantime, check out photos from the Brown Bird and o’death show in NYC this past weekend at BrooklynVegan.

o’death Show This Sunday

This is a big weekend for parties with “o” bands at SPACE Gallery. Tomorrow there’s SPACE co-founder Jon Courtney’s birthday celebration with Oneida and Company, and then on Sunday it’s a HillyTown shindig (which the Free Press recommends) featuring o’death, with Butcher Boy and Splendora Colt (read a PPH article on the band here) opening. We couldn’t be more excited to be presenting this show, and as you may know, it’ll also be my going away party as I leave Portland next week (to answer your question, yes, HillyTown will continue, details to come)! Check out these videos and get psyched, and I hope to see you this weekend. Get tickets for the HillyTown Presents show here. Read on…

Deep Heaven Now Recap [6.11.11]

This past weekend at SPACE Gallery, the Somerville, MA-based psych/shoegaze festival, Deep Heaven Now, landed in Portland for two days. Check out photos from the first day, which included Quilt, MMOSS, Foam Castles, 28 Degrees Taurus, and Metal Feathers. Mister Chris & the Instant Animals (or is it Mystery?) opened the night. CMJ Is Here! Day Party Update!

The CMJ Music Marathon & Film Festival in New York City is finally here. There’s been a lot of work leading up to this week, and now it’s time to make it all happen. This Friday, we’re throwing the first ever HillyTown Presents event outside of Portland – at The Rock Shop in Brooklyn. You may notice some slight changes to the flyer above – most notably, Shipyard has kindly joined as a sponsor and will be providing some delicious beer for the bands and fans. Details on that (specials, etc) as well as what to expect from Luke’s Lobster – who will also be on hand with their tasty goods – in the coming days. We’ll also have copies of the latest issue of Maine Mag and SPACE Gallery‘s Treble Treble Volume 1 on hand for you. All the more reasons to come out to the show! If you are heading to NYC for the week, this would be a good time to start following our twitter account.

Psst. As of right now, there are 17 hours left to participate in our Kickstarter campaign (which also helps with the bands’ expenses and extra promotion happening this week for the Official Showcase at Trash Bar on Saturday as well) – we’re still working on getting that last $400+ to put us over the top and bring in that cash to help fund all of this!

PS. Don’t forget – The Hold Steady is at Port City Music Hall with Marie Stella (the band I play in, which will be playing the CMJ Showcase) opening tonight! Doors open at 8pm!

P.O.S. Tour Dates Announced, Portland Included

POS-Astronautalis

While at SXSW last year (wow, that’s coming up again fast, isn’t it?) I got my first taste of rapper P.O.S. (at the same venue where I saw the Ting Tings the year before, a similar case of not knowing what I was in for and being sort of blown away). I was already a fan of Astronautalis (no stranger to Portland, himself) and pleasantly surprised when he joined P.O.S. onstage at that show (hence the above photo). Tour dates were just announced, and take a look at that – on March 11th both artists will be playing a show at SPACE Gallery. Plan to be there. Read on for all P.O.S. tour dates. Read on…

The Best Of The Decade + This Weekend

The Bollard published their list of The 10 Best Local Rock Albums Of The Decade (complete with mp3s). Is your favorite Portland band/album listed there? I’ve heard a few different opinions on what they missed or what shouldn’t have made it on such a list but did, but altogether it seems to make a lot of sense to me.

This weekend is another busy one, starting tonight with the Bakery Photo Collective’s annual fundraising photo auction, Photo A Go-Go from 6-8pm, with music by the venerable King Memphis. Check out a preview of the work available here.

The fun continues tomorrow, with the first PICNIC Holiday Sale, happening at the Irish Heritage Center (34 Gray Street) in Portland. I’ll be there at the Portland Pins table, selling photo prints, pins, and more. Get more info on the event – which will include live music – here. Once you’ve gotten some holiday shopping out of the way, head over to SPACE for the [dog] and [pony] dvd release show, featuring performances by Jacob Augustine, Marie Stella, Jesse Pilgrim, Wes Hartley, and more (including some interesting collaborations). The [dog] and [pony] guys have a new episode up, this time featuring Jakob Battick + Friends.

For more events this weekend, check the showlist.

Change Of Plans: Lady Lamb To Headline Tonight At SPACE

The previously announced headliner for tonight’s show at SPACE Gallery, Liz Durrett, has canceled her performance (not sure why it’s still listed on her show schedule, but according to SPACE she’s not playing).
Lady Lamb The Beekeeper
Instead, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper will now headline the show, with Bowdoin College’s The Milkman’s Union and California’s The Mumlers (watch this band, they’re about this close to being the next big thing) opening. Check out their video for “Coffin Factory” below:

Swooning

Have you been to SPACE lately? Maybe you were there for the Halloween party this weekend (in that case, you may be in one of these photobooth shots), or maybe you’ve wandered in during the day. Either way, you’ve surely noticed the intense exhibit taking up 90% of the wallspace inside. Thank NY artists Swoon and her friends for that. Over at the venue’s blog, Have Faith In Worthless Knowledge, you can take a look at a behind the scenes video, courtesy of the two best filmmakers in town named David. Check it out!.
