It must be the day of festival lineup announcements. Earlier we got the dirt on Picnic and just now word on Bangor’s KahBang Festival (August 6-14) came in. Last year we had an amazing time and took lots of photos at the festival’s first run, and we’ve already given away a couple of tickets to this year’s festivities, which includes both a film festival and expanded music festival. We’re particularly excited to see some locals (Jacob & The House Of Fire, Billy Libby, In The Audience, Grand Hotel, The Sea Captains, Good Kids Sprouting Horns, Holy Boys Danger Club to name a few) in the mix with national acts like The Gay Blads, OK Go, and FREE ENERGY! Read on for the full schedule. Read on… Congrats to our winners, Patrick and Danial! Look for your notifications soon! Everybody else, you can still purchase early bird tickets for the festival here! We had a lot of fun at the first annual KahBang Festival in Bangor, Maine last year. Now, with their second year, it’s looking like what was already off to a strong start is going to be much, much bigger this time around – all from August 6-14th. Great national acts such as OK Go, Free Energy, The Gay Blades, and Biz Markie alongside buzzy locals Good Kids Sprouting Horns, Grand Hotel, and Holy Boys Danger Club is looking like a solid lineup to me. Want to go to the festival? Here’s your chance. There are still a couple days to get in on early bird discount tickets (which I highly recommend), but while you’re at it, why not make a go at a free pair? I have one pair of TWO DAY MUSIC PASSES and one pair of FILM PASSES for HillyTown readers. All you have to do is comment on this post, answering this question: What Maine-based band or performer would you like to see profiled/interviewed/covered more here on HillyTown? In your comment, please indicate if you would like a Film or Music pass if picked as a winner. Winners will be picked at random on Friday, June 4. Your contact info will not be shared with anyone, but you do need to provide your email address when you comment so that winners can be contacted. The first batch of bands for this year’s (expanded!) KahBang Festival in Bangor (August 6-14) has been announced and it’s definitely off to a strong start! This year you can expect to see OK Go, Biz Markie, Free Energy, The Gay Blades (thankfully returning after melting faces last year), Bad Rabbits, The Aviation Orange, Hey Marseilles, Ros Raskin and The Rice Cakes, Holy Boys Danger Club, In the Audience, Grand Hotel, and Good Kids Sprouting Horns (one of my new favorite Maine bands). Already some Portland and other Maine locals in the mix with big national acts – who else do you think they might add? Now in its second year, Bangor’s KahBang Festival is already expanding. They’ve announced the dates as August 6th through the 14th for the festival, which will now include films and art exhibits in addition to the music portion. With this change, even their name is growing: the event is now called KahBang: Music, Art, Film. More details tba. Check out the HillyTown coverage of their first festival here. We had a great time at the first KahBang Music & Art Festival up in Bangor, Maine this weekend (Saturday, August 15, 2009). Check out the full photo gallery (it’s a big one, 90 photos strong) here. It was no surprise that Matt & Kim would be a highlight (if you haven’t seen them, they put on a fun, highly energized show, always full of crowd-pleasing interaction and mile-wide-smiles), but they weren’t the only memorable act of the day. I was personally very impressed by The Gay Blades (all promotional associations aside, I was already a fan of their music and had high hopes for their performance), as they took a mostly indifferent crowd and turned them into fans hungry for more, bringing some onstage during their set to play percussion. The fact that their friend April Smith (who’d already played earlier on the main stage) joined them a few times certainly added to their set. Ra Ra Riot and Royal Bangs brought really enjoyable, tight sets to the main stage, but the real standout was clearly Ida Maria, whose caustic (drunk) set inspired a lot of shrieking and chearing from the crowd, most of whom lined up for autographs at the merch tent afterwards. The local bands who played earlier in the day all did a great job, bringing the energy up despite a slow build to the crowd. It would have been great to see some more bands from Maine play, or maybe an additional small/acoustic stage to get even more great local artists involved, but all in all KahBang got off to a great start this year, and everyone involved deserves congratulations (and your attendance next year!) Check out the KahBang Music Fest ’09 photo gallery. Remember the contest I’m running? Yup, the one where you can win two passes to the KahBang Fest in Bangor this Saturday just by emailing me! Go look at the pretty picture of The Gay Blades and follow the directions to email me and then at exactly 1:30pm today I will randomly select one winner from all the submissions. Being clever in your email is great, but doesn’t actually affect your chances at winning. Good luck! |
