Photos and recap by David Zwickerhill. Underground hip hop legend Awol One played the Big Easy last Wednesday and it was a great one. Several local acts warmed up including hometown hero Brzowski who ripped it in what was to be one of his last stateside performances before his European tour with Moshe. Next up was Connecticut’s Ceschi who brought his guitar down into the crowd and performed with his trademark passion and sincerity. He is always worth seeing no matter who he’s playing with. Last weekend, the first ROCK THAT: Portland Maine Hip Hop Festival took over the Big Easy from Friday, 11/19 to Sunday, 11/21. Mark Curdo, the event’s organizer, says that the event, whose purpose was to “put resources, efforts and passion together all at once to make as much noise as possible for the local hip hop scene, which is as great as its ever been” was “a success for sure.” All the profits from the event will “help the promo efforts behind the open mic nights [Wednesdays at the Big Easy] – this way everyone can benefit and the scene gets a continued push beyond the weekend of ROCK THAT.” With such a positive response, he also indicated that a follow up next year is definitely a possibility.
