HillyTown (+ A Robot) Presented [8.27.11]

Since we had a few bands coming up from NY to play Picnic, we wanted to give locals a chance to catch a longer performance than the daytime festival allowed, so we worked with A Robot Booking to throw the Official Picnic Afterparty at Geno’s on August 27. Portland’s The Deliberates and Vanityites joined NYC’s Clouder and Weird Children for a soggy night of good, messy fun. Read on for photos by Bryan Bruchman. Read on…

The Outfits Demo by The Outfits

This is another big weekend for us! Rain or shine, we’ll be outside all day tomorrow (Sat. 8/27) in Lincoln Park in Portland for the FREE Picnic Music + Arts Festival. We curated the music lineup for this year’s festivities and are excited to see all these bands play. Here’s the schedule for the day (please note that NYC’s The Bandana Splits had to cancel, so Henry Jamison is filling in):

11:15 Mango Floss
12:00 Mouth Washington
12:45 Weird Children (NYC)
1:30 Toughcats
2:15 Henry Jamison (of The Milkman’s Union)
3:00 Butcher Boy
3:45 The Outfits
4:15 Clouder (NYC)
5:00 Sunset Hearts

Dylan over at Dispatch did a preview of the bands here.

Following the 11am-6pm outdoor event, we’re teaming up with A Robot Booking + Promotion to bring you the official Picnic Afterparty at Geno’s, starting at 9pm. The party is 21+, kicks off at 9pm, and features two of the NYC bands playing Picnic (Clouder and Weird Children), along with two Portland bands (Vanityites and The Deliberates). Here’s the Facebook event page. See you there!

Jucifer Played Geno’s [7.22.11]

According to our photographer David Zwickerhill, the show was crazy. We believe it. The Athens, GA-based metal duo Jucifer are infamous for their massive wall of amps and obscene volume levels, and it looks like they held nothing back at this show on July 22 at Geno’s. Read on for photos of Jucifer and local opener Hessian after the jump. Read on…

Computer At Sea Tonight, Plus Xylos Early

Hopefully you already know about the big Computer At Sea record (as in vinyl!) release show tonight at Geno’s. Hi Tiger and Power Lines will be on hand to help (CAS’s) Galen Richmond celebrate the release of Palace Of The Lightbulbs.

Looking to get your music fix for synthy pop started a bit early tonight (or still dancing from last night)? Head to Slainte for 8pm, when NYC’s Xylos will play. If any HillyTown readers out there happen to snap some photos at either of these shows, we’d love to see them. Drop a link in the comments or email us!

More On Covers Vs. Originals. Now Featuring More Kurt Baker.

Well I guess I got my wish. Yesterday I posted about Geno’s Rock Club’s anti-cover policy – and mentioned that I’d be curious to hear from Kurt Baker (who is about to release an all-covers record – and today the Daily Sun has an article digging a bit deeper in which they spent a good chunk of space talking to Kurt. It sort of turned into a nice little promo op for him, in fact, why not take a look at the video promo for his release show at SPACE Gallery on August 13?

Though he won’t be playing covers, he will in fact be playing at Geno’s with his original rock band The Goodnight Process this Sunday.

No Room For Covers At Geno’s

Geno's

In a town where playing other people’s music is a career for so many (or at least a few extra bucks in the pockets of local musicians whose own original efforts probably don’t even pay for gas), somebody is taking a stand against it. Geno’s Rock Club (who have always had the tagline of “We are an ALL ORIGINAL MUSIC ROCK CLUB!!” on their Myspace page) put out this message today:

As of today Geno’s Rock Club has a NO TOLERANCE RULE when it comes to cover songs on our stage. We are and always have been an ALL ORIGINAL rock club and take that statement very seriously. If a band plays a cover song on our stage from today forward chances are they will not be asked back. Please respect mine [booker Knaughty Sarah] and Jr’s wishes and leave the cover songs at the door. Thanks so much for all your support!

A big part of the reasoning behind it is that the venue doesn’t pay ASCAP, so they technically can’t have covers performed (so break the rule and you’re potentially putting them in danger, as well as getting yourself blacklisted), but in general it is a sentiment we can get behind. Though sometimes it can be fun to see a different take on a song you know (when you’re not familiar with the local band’s own music), it’s a good challenge to musicians to step it up with their own work and keep it original. I hope bands keep it in mind even when it comes to ironic terrible one hit wonder covers (Gully, I’m looking at you) and I’m interested in hearing what other musicians in the local scene think about this policy. Maybe even Kurt Baker, who clearly will not be playing a show at Geno’s any time soon.

Seriously though, can we take this a step further and ban all Beatles (and offshoot bands) covers in Portland? I don’t want to hear anybody play that intro to “Come Together” again.

Tonight Is The Night For SIN

To think, I almost didn’t mention tonight’s installment of For Your Pleasure: SIN! Featuring dancing from Atomic Trash, Lord Byron, Ahna the Ladybeast, Greybush, and music by DJ Roy (from WMPG), DJ Marcus Caine, and DJ Wolfie Whistle. All tonight at Geno’s for $5. Watch their inspiring (creepy) promotional video below.
