Last weekend, a show with a spectacular lineup popped up in Kittery, having been moved from a venue in NH. Looks like the story is repeating itself, as this Friday, the Daytrotter Barnstormers 5 show (with Deer Tick, We Are Augustines, and more) has also been moved from NH to the venue pictured in this post. Originally planned for a farm in New Hampshire, the Runnymede Project Benefit Show crossed the border into Maine when compliance issues with the town forced organizers to find a new site for the event. Read on… What, is the title a little too much? But it’s true! Billed on the Facebook event as “HOMETOWN FAVS & LOVES AFAR|||SOUNDS oF LIMITLESS GENEROSITY,” it seemed likely that there’d be warm and fuzzy feelings at Kittery’s BUOY Gallery for last night’s show, which included hometown favorite Nat Baldwin (of Dirty Projectors), Brooklyn sax maniac Travis Laplante, and the fragile sounds of Kurt Weisman from Vermont. It was (regrettably) my first time making it down to the small yet spacious venue, but on this occasion the room was filled with more people than I would have anticipated – maybe 40 or 50 – and all seemed to be having a great time, fully appreciative of the somewhat challenging music presented. The BUOY Gallery is a relatively new performance venue located in Kittery, Maine. From the moment I stepped inside I noticed how tremendously DIY the venue is, with colored clamp lights from Wal-Mart and Peavey speakers stacked onto milk crates.
