Portland musician Samuel James has just released a new video for his song “Nineteen.” The clip was directed by local filmmaker Allen Baldwin and features a refreshing mix of live footage and studio shots for the sparse blues song. Samuel James plays in Portland this Friday with G. Love at the Maine State Pier and again on July 22 at One Longfellow. He may not be headed to Texas like some other Maine-based musicians in the coming weeks, but Portland’s favorite bluesman (and according to his bio, the last of the great, black, American troubadours) is about to hit the road for a bit. Samuel James (aka Sugar Smallhouse) plays has a style all his own and is a performer very much worth seeing live. If you get a chance to catch one of these shows, don’t miss out. 3/1 @ Two Sheep Sound Works [Providence, RI] Then it’s off to Europe! Read on for a video from the 2010 Building Of Song Festival, a Michael Jackson cover, and more. Local bluesman Samuel James is a busy guy. Not only does he hold down a Thursday night residency at Blue but he is regularly tapped for opening gigs for the likes of Johnny Winter and the like when he’s not touring the country. Between official gigs you can often find him playing somewhere around town, wowing crowds with his slide guitar work and knack for storytelling. Photos by Bryan Bruchman, interviews by Will Ethridge. What was the most unusual place you’ve ever played music in? What is the most mysterious album you own? (i.e. you don’t know anything about the musicians’ identities) Describe your favorite sound not made by a musical instrument.
