Photo Recap: Free Range Fest [4.30.11] – Part 3

As you’ve already seen in parts 1 and 2 of our Free Range Music Festival photo coverage, we all had an incredible time in Belfast this weekend. This is the third and final installment of photos, which includes the HillyTown afterparty held at Three Tides. The party was a big success – in fact we were surprised when the venue hit capacity and people couldn’t get in, which we certainly didn’t expect to happen. Thanks again to the Free Range Music Festival, Three Tides, our HillyTown photographers, and Mango Floss and Vistas (who played the party) for an unforgettable time. Photos by Conall O’Brien, Emily Qualey, Chelsea Lauryn Dowd, and Bryan Bruchman. Don’t forget to check out parts one and two for the rest of the festival photos (posts are in roughly chronological order) as well as Brass Cankles for videos from Mike Cunnane (who will forever be on the VIP list – even if one doesn’t exist-from now on). Free Range Fest + HillyTown Afterparty!

We’ve been hinting at this for a while now, and we’re psyched to finally be able to announce it.

HillyTown Presents the Free Range Fest Afterparty! Starting at 10pm and open to guests 21+, the party will go down at Three Tides – an excellent bar with great food, beer, and a gorgeous outdoor space. Live music will be provided by Mango Floss and Vistas (who you can get a taste of tonight at SPACE).

This month (Saturday, April 30) the Belfast Free Range Music Festival returns for its second year. Remind yourself of last year’s excitement through our photos and recap. It was where we fell in love with The Class Machine, got sucked in by Good Kids Sprouting Horns, were charmed by The David Wax Museum, and inspired by Brown Bird. One can only imagine what surprises this year will bring.

Here’s the full list of participating acts. Plan to come out and see your favorites as well as discovering some great new acts! Michael Hurley, Grass Widow, Jonny Corndawg, Brenda, Audrey Ryan, Time Crisis, Toughcats, Big Blood, Jacob Augustine, Gawler Family Band, Sunset Hearts, CatchaVibe, Broken Water, Mehuman Trio, The Rattlesnakes, Marie Stella, The Milkman’s Union, Ancestral Diet, Dead Man’s Clothes, The 220s, Press Gang, Full Contact Kitty, Tit City, The Spaceys, Mark Mandeville & Raianne Richards, Asa Irons, Cave Bears, VoxX, and In Houses in Trees. Roots & Tendrils Closing This Month

We’re sad to share the news that our friends up in Belfast at Roots & Tendrils have made the decision to close their shop at 2 Cross Street at the end of January. Since opening in the Winter of 2009, they’ve done some great work with music and artists, and even launched the Free Range Music Fest (which will happen on April 30 this year). The store was the first location for Portland Pins outside of Portland, and we have definitely appreciated all of their support with that project. They’ll be continuing to be involved in events across Maine and online sales while they look for another, more appropriate physical space for what they are looking to do. We wish them the best of luck, and look forward to seeing what they do in the future. If you can, please stop by and support them during the month of January and stay updated on their work at the R&T site and on Facebook. Read their note after the jump. Read on…

Belfast Free Range Music Fest Details

On a rainy Monday morning like this, why not look a head to (possibly) warmer weather and brighter skies, to a day you can spend roaming from venue to venue in Belfast, Maine enjoying the Free Range Music Festival? Performers have been announced for the Saturday, April 24 multi-venue event. Here’s the list: THE JAZZ MANDOLIN PROJECT, David Wax Museum, Brown Bird, Tiger Saw, The Free Seedlings, David Dodson, Mary Anne Driscoll, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, Travis Lloyd Band, Wesley Hartley and the Traveling Trees, The Fofers, Luna Madidus, South China, Lazarus, Unbunny, Shawn Mercer and the Boondock Blues Band, Uke of Spaces, Cinder Conk, Good Kids Sprouting Horns, Gully, Caethua, Travis Cyr and the Strings of Calamity, Class Machine, Mahdi Army Orkestars, Calvin and the Free Will Agents, and Rural Electric. Looks like it went in a slightly more folky/acoustic direction than some may have previously expected (with a few exceptions such as Gully and the Class Machine) but altogether it sounds like a great idea not only to give yourself a reason to hang out in Belfast, but to check out 6 venues and 25 bands. Check out their website for more info!
