The same night as the Dawes/Brett Dennen show just down the road, two eponymous local acts took the stage for Port City Music Hall‘s weekly TWO show. Both 60′s psych/britpop-inspired rocked Jeff Beam (his band dropped the Ice Storm… part) and Foldsian piano man Will Gattis have have featured albums here on HillyTown in the past, and Beam even played the winter Picnic event that we curated (that reminds me, look out for the summer Picnic music lineup to be announced before long, and get those vendor applications in!). Both acts performed strongly, but Gattis deserves extra credit for playing through an illness (food poisoning, potentially) that made him leave the stage multiple times, returning each time to get right back into the next song. On Tuesday night, two of Portland’s newer and fastest-rising bands played a TWO show at Port City Music Hall. Hi Tiger started the night with their Joy Division-inspired dark art pop, while Sunset Hearts‘ synthy, 80′s tunes that take on a Talking Heads and Morrissey tone, closed it out. Portland’s preeminent popster, Kurt Baker, is about to drop a new limited edition single with two tracks recorded by Jon Wyman – “Don’t Steal My Heart Away” b/w “Why You Gotta Lie” – just in time for his TWO show at Port City Music Hall tomorrow (2/22/11). The $2, two local band show (with $2 beers) will also be the cd release party for Grand Hotel‘s new disc, In Color. Check out the track Walken to get a taste of the band’s OK Go meets Radiohead style – the album will be available at the show for just $2! That’s a potential full night of music, drinking, and merch for under $10. Not bad!
Here’s what Kurt has to say about his new track, which you can hear for the first time below:
I had originally penned this tune for a group I briefly played with called The Goodnight Process in the spring of 2010. The band had been a local staple on the Portland, ME music scene playing pop/rock that was very influenced by groups like Rooney and Sondre Lerche, but when I joined the group we took a more straight ahead 70’s power pop approach, trying to draw heavily on groups like the Knack and Electric Light Orchestra. “Don’t Steal My Heart Away” could have been a The Leftovers tune, but playing it with a whole set of musicians in the Goodnight Process really shaped how the song would eventually turn out. I dug this tune so much, and the audience reception to it was always great whenever we played it live, so after my stay in The Goodnight Process, this was one of the first tunes I wanted to record for my solo album. This track features some excellent synth and back up vocal work from Kris “Fingers” Rodgers, and a killer lead guitar solo that channels The Shirelles “Will You Still Love Me Tomorow”, thanks to guitar monster Miek Rodrigue.”
UPDATE: The limited exclusive on this stream is over! Thanks for looking though!
Following the massive success of their winter local music series, TWO, Port City Music Hall is at it again with another slew of $2 shows on Tuesday nights (mostly), which kicked off last night with what looked to be a packed house (I only saw in passing, on my way to what turned out to be a sold out Clash Of The Titans at Empire – congrats to the Talking Heads Band!).

Word is that the TWO Local Music Series at Port City Music Hall (Tuesdays, two bands, $2 cover, $2 beers) is going well (see photos from last week’s Dilly Dilly + Lady Lamb show there)… and in the interest of a bit of self-promo, here’s the flyer (above) for tomorrow’s installment of the concert series, featuring Marie Stella (the band I play in) with Metal Feathers. MF have a new jam up on their myspace called “City Hall” which I highly recommend you go and listen to, like right now. Very good.
It was great to see Port City Music Hall filled with so many people for this double bill of local musicians on Tuesday, February 2. Lady Lamb The Beekeeper and Dilly Dilly each played two sets – partially together – as part of the venue’s TWO local music series. Photos by Bryan Bruchman.
