As you’ve already seen in parts 1 and 2 of our Free Range Music Festival photo coverage, we all had an incredible time in Belfast this weekend. This is the third and final installment of photos, which includes the HillyTown afterparty held at Three Tides. The party was a big success – in fact we were surprised when the venue hit capacity and people couldn’t get in, which we certainly didn’t expect to happen. Thanks again to the Free Range Music Festival, Three Tides, our HillyTown photographers, and Mango Floss and Vistas (who played the party) for an unforgettable time. Photos by Conall O’Brien, Emily Qualey, Chelsea Lauryn Dowd, and Bryan Bruchman. Don’t forget to check out parts one and two for the rest of the festival photos (posts are in roughly chronological order) as well as Brass Cankles for videos from Mike Cunnane (who will forever be on the VIP list – even if one doesn’t exist-from now on). Read on… I’m back from SXSW and catching up on the photos of all the bands I saw there. Here’s another one! Band: Dead Man’s Clothes / Hometown: Portland, Maine! This week’s Portland Phoenix features SXSW coverage, including a cover story and photo of mine from this show. Local indie rockers Dead Man’s Clothes (who we checked in with just before they hit the road) rolled into Austin, TX without an official showcase, and ultimately ended up scheduling three shows (including one officially-sanctioned festival party) but only the first – at an unofficial day party outside a coffee shop – actually happened. This was that show (note: Cherrywood Coffeehouse had excellent food, coffee, and atmospher both inside and out – I wish we had places like this here in Portland!) . Despite the odd environment and early hour, the band performed strongly, a testament to the consistent development of their talents since we first encountered them. Read on for more photos from their show. This Saturday night, The Oak + The Ax presents a show entitled “Bad Seeds.” Check out the promo video below: This show serves as the homecoming for Dead Man’s Clothes, who just returned from a tour that took them to SXSW (more on that later) with a number of stops along the way. We’re not entirely sure what they mean by Good Seeds ($10) and Bad Seeds ($6) but we’re going to assume that everybody attending is a Bad Seed. I know it’s just a coincidence, but I can’t help but feel just a bit like this is a pretty sweet birthday present: local band Dead Man’s Clothes just released a brand new 2-song digital single. “From The Water” is a bit of a deceptive tune, starting slow with a hint of country and weaving through epic rock landscapes (with some fine Fleet Foxes/MMJ vocal hints) before launching into a steadier groove near the 4-minute mark. This is where it gets really interesting: dueling guitarists Don Dumont and TJ Metcalfe bring it back to indie rock territory as the pace picks up through the end of the track with a chorus of looping guitar riffs. Lyrically, Dumont keeps it simple but true: “I want to feel it, not just know it.” The second song, “Post-Future,” wastes little time getting to the poppier punk tempos and keeps it short and sweet at under 3 minutes. Check out the single below – highly recommended for fans of Dismemberment Plan, Tapes ‘n Tapes, Fountains of Wayne, Menomena, My Morning Jacket, Arcade Fire, and Sunny Day Real Estate.
3/2 – Apohadion [Portland, ME] w/Marie Stella, The Dirty Dishes (BOS), Grass Is Green Video from DMC’s release show for Ice Is War back in August, 2010. Become a fan of Dead Man’s Clothes on Facebook. Portland’s “Best New Act” (according to the Phoenix Best Music Poll), Dead Man’s Clothes, have just announced the detail on their release party for their upcoming cd, Ice Is War. The event will take the form of a masquerade ball (masks/costumes encouraged!) at SPACE Gallery on Saturday, August 14. Theodore Treehouse and the Dirty Dishes Burlesque Revue join the festivities, with DJ duo BAM BAM closing the night out in their own special hit-blasting dance party way. Get a preview of the new jams via a new free digital single, Moving Mountains – it will also be streaming on the “Featured Album” section of this site for the next week.
For all my talk about the Apohadion, last night was the first time I actually made it down to a show there. The space is great, and reminds me of other diy venues I’ve seen, especially Death By Audio in Brooklyn (but that might be the checkered floor more than anything else – though both spaces also serve as practice rooms, recording studios, and FX pedal workshops…).
