And clearly the winner for the creepy/awesome award (too bad I can’t embed it, but please take a look, it’s worth watching for the ridiculous factor alone): Hutch Heelan – “Young & Invincible”
The first time I saw Cleveland, Ohio’s This Moment In Black History, lead singer Christopher Kulcsar ran off the stage and across the tables of indifferent Blackberry-addicted hipsters at The Annex in NYC during the CMJ Music Marathon. That left quite an impression. I caught them again this year during SXSW on March 19 at Plush in Austin, TX and managed to talk the band into promising to come out to Portland, Maine. Tonight, TMIBH plays with their tourmates Sun God, and locals Huak open (with a set including many of the new songs they’ve been recording recently at Forest City!). Read on for more photos from TMIBH’s SXSW show. Continue reading This Moment In Black History – Tonight @ SPACE
Jana Hunter began her career last decade with an acoustic guitar in her hand and two terrific albums of the “freak folk†variety — including the first album on Andy Cabic (of Vetiver) and Devendra Banhart’s Gnomonsong label. With the public interest for such music dwindling a tad from its heights of six years ago, and perhaps finding herself at a creative crossroads, Hunter resurfaced this year as the frontwoman for rock ensemble Lower Dens.
OK, so it wasn’t like Dylan going electric in 1965, but it was still a calculated career risk that paid off admirably: Twin-Hand Movement is one of the best indie-rock records of the year so far, a sultry blend of dizzying shoegaze and drony dream-pop, one that will remind listeners of random stuff like early Cat Power, Mazzy Star, and Joy Division, and contains long instrumental passages that are emotional and evocative as any folk music, freaky or otherwise.
Lower Dens performs at The Apohadion at 7 p.m., Monday, Aug. 9, along with touring partner Inoculist (feauting Jana’s brother John), a reunion set by Ian Paige’s White Light (featuring Jeremy and Jerusha Robinson of South China – was the last time we saw them really during last year’s OFFStage series?), and Jakob Battick & Friends (who was recently featured on this site). This event is a unique collaboration between SPACE Gallery (who are presenting the event) and DIY space The Apohadion. I exchanged a brief email interview with Hunter about Lower Dens the week prior.
The first question is the obvious one: what led you to get Lower Dens together?
I put together a band for a tour of my solo music, and found Geoff Graham and Abe Sanders through mutual friends. When the tour was over, I’d found I really liked working with them and asked if they’d consider working on new material. We were about halfway through the writing process when Will Adams joined. He’s an old friend that wasn’t finding work on Nova Scotia farms. I convinced him this was a better deal.
Later on tonight (with doors at 8:30, music starting at 9pm), Dup Crosson returns to Maine with his act Saint Solitude (no longer a solo project – this is his first tour with full band!) to headline a show at SPACE Gallery. Marie Stella (the band I play in) opens, kicking off a three-day run of shows that includes a stop at The Delancey in NYC (Friday) and the Deep Heaven Now Fest in Somerville, MA (Sat)! Tonight’s show is just $6.
In The Audience are the band at the center of the local (international) label, Nice Friends (who you may have read about recently). Their album What Lives will be out on August 31, but they’ve got a free, instrumental ep called Lost Lives (officially out July 28) to help you get excited for their full length. Listen to it below or check it on over on the left as the featured album this week! Catch the band live next weekend at the KahBang Festival.
Every week (usually on Wednesdays) we pick a new album to feature on the site. Submit your new music by emailing hello@hillytown.com with a link to your embeddable album stream (on Bandcamp, Soundcloud, Last.fm, etc).
This new jam from Portland’s ubiquitous popster, Spencer Albee (As Fast As, Rustic Overtones, Rocktopus), is an interesting change in direction. Most recently, The School Spirit Mafia took the Beatles to the Polyphonic Spree, but this new project is closer to Beck and the Gorillaz. Space Versus Speed will debut on August 10, and finds Albee joined by Nate Nadeau and Neil Collins. This first track, “I Rok,” also features Sayid and Jamie Colpoys. I haven’t heard anything else yet, but from what I’ve been told it’s a little more classic rock than this electronic-influenced track.
Take a ride up, way up. For those unfamiliar with the annual ArootsAkoostic festival in New Sweden, Maine, just take a look at this map.
The extensive lineup includes some of the state of Maine’s best music, all in a setting far from the clubs and bars where you might usually see them.
Thomas Park is located on Station Rd (Just off of Rt. 161) in New Sweden (about 8 miles north of Caribou, 5 Hrs. North of Portland). Tickets are $10.00 (kids under 10 get in free) and can be purchased at the gate or in advance by email. Doors open at 10am with music on two stage froms 11am to 8pm. In addition to the two main stages, Portland’s Planets Around The Sun will take the form of EARTHCRAFT and perform in the woods during the day. The festival organizers ask that you bring a non-perishable/canned food item for donation to help the New Sweden Food Pantry.
