Brown Bird – “Fingers To The Bone

Though they call Rhode Island home, we sure do love Brown Bird around here. From their Maine roots to their work with Peapod Recordings and occasional involvement of Maine musicians Jeremy and Jerusha Robinson (South China), the duo of David Lamb and MorganEve Swain seem right at home every time they come through Portland (or Biddeford). This summer the band continues their march along the east coast, including a prime slot at the Newport Folk Festival, all in preparation for the release of their new LP, Salt For Salt, October 18 on Supply & Demand Music (where they’ll be in good company with bands like Dark Dark Dark – who they’ll be sharing some dates with – and Vandaveer). We love the cover art by Will Schaff.

Stream the first single, “Fingers to the Bone,” below and read on for tour dates (including a stop in Portland) and the Salt For Salt tracklist.

Horse Thief’s Bloodline Totem Poles Out Today

Mckeensstreet Music is a Portland-based label with a small but growing roster of acts across the country (you are likely well-acquainted with their arguably most well-known group, Brenda) and they’ve been smart with promotion through free album downloads. Today, they released Bloodline Totem Poles, the debut album from Horse Thief, aka Chad Chamberlain. Fans of Yo La Tengo, Elliott Smith, Grizzly Bear’s Horn Of Plenty, and tape hiss will love these recordings and I highly recommend checking them out. Go here to get the download. Watch a video for album closer “Die Young” below.

Check out Horse Thief on Facebook, and read the Horse Thief blog.

Foam Castles Album Officially Available

Foam Castles – “Garage From Sling Blade”

Portland’s Foam Castles – who played our OFFStage series this summer, Picnic, and the Summer Solstice boat party – have obviously been busy since we profiled the band’s sole member/mastermind/songwriter, Tyler Jackson, back in May. We’ve been enjoying the new album, Molly’s Jungle, since the Spring, but today marks its official release. Head to the band page at Peapod to check out some tracks and purchase the album. Though it was a definite summer jam album, it should do you just fine through the Fall (which we seem to have taken a time machine right to the middle of this year, right?).

Wesley Hartley’s Quiver…

Wesley Hartley, of Dead End Armory (who are, I believe, on hiatus), has quietly released a free, 10-song solo acoustic album through his art website. The album, Quiver Spoked Largely Eyed, can be downloaded (one track at a time unless you upgrade your account) from here.

Catch him live at SPACE Gallery in December opening for AA Bondy or at the Dog and Pony Show DVD release show!

Dilly Dilly’s Of Art And Intention Is Free

Dilly Dilly is one of those Portland musicians who you need to know. We featured her recently (for the Tower Of Song Fest) but this week there’s cause for celebration and a reminder: she’s just released a full length album called Of Art And Intention which you can download for free from her website. The album features some pretty spectacular guest musicians and engineers: Alias, Spencer Albee, Sontiago, Jason Ingalls, and Fresh Kils. Artwork is by Jason Gorcoff.

Though the album is free, donations are being accepted and are highly encouraged.
