I have to say, I love putting on shows at Slainte Wine Bar. It’s a pretty unassuming little room, but you can do great things there. Audiences love that shows are free, the food is good (and it was half-price on this occasion!), and the atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable for the performers. While […]
Last week, Ray LaMontagne returned to his home state of Maine to play two sold out shows at Merrill Auditorium in Portland. Fun fact: apparently he lives in a house in Lewiston that was previously occupied by Norman Mailer. Interesting.
Read on for a full review of the first of the two shows – […]
We had a great time tonight, both at the Phoenix awards show and at our own party at Slainte. The big news of the day, however, is that They Might Be Giants are scheduled to appear at the Port City Music Hall on Friday, June 12! This is great news!
More (including photos from tonight) […]
Put the taxes behind you and come out for a great night of music tonight at Slainte. We’ve got locals White Light and South China (who sounded great together on WMPG’s Liberation By Sound yesterday) along with the Brooklyn duo Mary Halvorson & Jessica Pavone. As always at Slainte (24 Preble St. in downtown […]
Gerald Von Stoddard sent out the word this week that the mighty have fallen. Local juggernauts Cougars Kill Cobras have called it quits. Bummer. A new club in Windham called Club 302 will have their grand opening on April 22. They are currently booking bands. The Noise has an interesting review of the Johnny […]
Friday was my first time attending a show at The Station, to see Dinosaur Jr. with Awesome Color.

Honey Clouds frontman Trey Hughes will be the special guest on DJ Roy’s show Liberation By Sound this afternoon on WMPG. Tune inf at wmpg.org from 3-5 pm today to hear some of Trey’s favorite music, along with some special new Honey Clouds jams.

Jump right into it!
It’s nomination time for the Second Annual Portland Buy Local Indie Biz Awards! Forbes named Portland, Maine as one of the country’s ten most livable cities (maybe the most livable?) They must like lighthouses and boats. Perhaps the most re-blogged national mention of Portland’s awesomeness since last week’s Washington Post mention! […]
It’s no joke, tonight at Strange Maine there will be a special show/celebration in honor of the record/assorted things/video store/venue’s 6th birthday!
Ryan Cutler, Strawberry Allstars, Letters to the Moon, American War, and the unforgettable Crank Sturgeon + id m theft able duo are scheduled to perform/dance/chase you down the street (or something). […]
Make sure to tune into WMPG (90.9/104.1FM in Portland) today from 3-5pm to listen to Liberation By Sound with DJ Roy. For the second half of the program he’ll have special guests John, Will, and Alicia from the Tower Of Song on the air, talking about their project and an upcoming festival in the […]
Yes, really. Review and photos by Dilly Dilly, edited by Nancy Cartonio.

Picture it… United States Of America, 1989. The girls all had poof bangs, stirrup pants and jellies. The guys all had asymmetrical lines shaved into the sides of their heads, hammer pants and hyper-color shirts. […]
Since I’m back to my regularly-scheduled music (and superhero, apparently) blogging over at Subinev, let’s keep these roundups to the Maine news. Alright? On with it!
I hope you weren’t too excited about that Digable Planets show scheduled for tomorrow, because it’s not happening. Why? They broke up! The Wire has an in-depth profile of […]
Good question, music fan. Over at Dylan’s blog, Port City Music Hall (among other venues) booker Lauren does a good job of addressing that issue. It’s an unfortunate state of affairs, but it’s true, getting some of the acts that many of us would love to see here in Portland is just impossible for a […]
Hey all – this afternoon I’ll be stopping by DJ Roy’s show on WMPG, Liberation By Sound, to catch up after last weeks’ South By Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas. Tune in at WMPG.org or 90.9/104.1FM to listen in from 3-5pm!
I skipped the (reportedly incredible) Lady Lamb The Beekeeper / Sister Suvi show at SPACE on Friday to check out America’s favorite treadmill enthusiasts, OK Go, at the Port City Music Hall. It was one of the smaller venues I’ve seen them in (well, aside from that backyard in Austin 3 years ago, but […]
