That’s the thing right there. (Yes, we know there are a bunch of great shows before then this weekend. Go to them. All of them.)
While the focus of Picnic Music + Arts Festival for many people is clearly the arts, with tons of great vendors selling handmade crafts, vintage finds, and tasty food all around Lincoln Park, we were focused largely on the music side of things, considering that HillyTown curated that portion of the festival. August 27 happened to be when Hurricane Irene was gearing up to pound the east coast (thankfully the damage was less than anticipated – though still nothing to ignore) and one of the NYC-based bands scheduled to play (The Bandana Splits) was unable to make the trek due to the weather. The weather in Portland held up nicely, and we enjoyed a great day in the sun with excellent music from Mango Floss, Mouth Washington, Weird Children, the Toughcats, Henry Jamison, Butcher Boy, The Outfits, Clouder, and Sunset Hearts. Thanks to Picnic and all the bands! Read on for a photo gallery. Rain or shine, we’ll be outside all day tomorrow (Sat. 8/27) in Lincoln Park in Portland for the FREE Picnic Music + Arts Festival. We curated the music lineup for this year’s festivities and are excited to see all these bands play. Here’s the schedule for the day (please note that NYC’s The Bandana Splits had to cancel, so Henry Jamison is filling in): 11:15 Mango Floss Dylan over at Dispatch did a preview of the bands here. ![]() Picnic Afterparty poster by Robbie Kanner Following the 11am-6pm outdoor event, we’re teaming up with A Robot Booking + Promotion to bring you the official Picnic Afterparty at Geno’s, starting at 9pm. The party is 21+, kicks off at 9pm, and features two of the NYC bands playing Picnic (Clouder and Weird Children), along with two Portland bands (Vanityites and The Deliberates). Here’s the Facebook event page. See you there! We’re excited to announce the HillyTown Presents-curated lineup of bands playing at next month’s Picnic Music & Arts Festival in Portland, Maine. The free August 27th festival will take place at Lincoln Park on Congress Street and Franklin Arterial from 11am-6pm. We’ve put together a fun day including Maine bands and 3 NYC acts coming up for the fun.
Performing bands (in no particular order): Butcher Boy We sure hope to see you there. Of course, before that, there is the boat on August 7. Contact us to purchase tickets for that one!
PICNIC Holiday Sale music presented by HillyTown from Bryan Bruchman on Vimeo. Thanks to the bands and DJs that took part in the music portion of this year’s PICNIC Holiday Music + Arts Sale in Portland, ME! Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 11-12, 2010. Thanks to everybody involved, it was great to be a part of PICNIC! Thanks to all the bands: Theodore Treehouse, Jeff Beam, Computer At Sea, In The Audience, and Milkman’s Union. Also, big thanks to the Maine Radio Project DJs and Matt Little (a trued gentleman of rock ‘n roll!) for keeping things lively between the bands! Our friends at the Picnic Music + Arts Festival are gearing up for their 3rd Annual event, happening exactly one month from today on August 28! If you’ve been keeping up, you’re probably already excited about the extensive list of great local vendors and artists, or perhaps the prospect of snacking on tasty goods from Skinny Cart BBQ and Verbena Cafe, but now there’s even more reason to get psyched: the music lineup has just been announced! Foam Castles (who we profiled 2 months ago played our OFFStage @SPACE show last night) kick it off bright and early. Some more OFFStage alums (Same Basic Bear, Domino Harvey, Phantom Buffalo) will also be getting in on the outdoor action. 11:00 Foam Castles The Bollard published their list of The 10 Best Local Rock Albums Of The Decade (complete with mp3s). Is your favorite Portland band/album listed there? I’ve heard a few different opinions on what they missed or what shouldn’t have made it on such a list but did, but altogether it seems to make a lot of sense to me. This weekend is another busy one, starting tonight with the Bakery Photo Collective’s annual fundraising photo auction, Photo A Go-Go from 6-8pm, with music by the venerable King Memphis. Check out a preview of the work available here. The fun continues tomorrow, with the first PICNIC Holiday Sale, happening at the Irish Heritage Center (34 Gray Street) in Portland. I’ll be there at the Portland Pins table, selling photo prints, pins, and more. Get more info on the event – which will include live music – here. Once you’ve gotten some holiday shopping out of the way, head over to SPACE for the [dog] and [pony] dvd release show, featuring performances by Jacob Augustine, Marie Stella, Jesse Pilgrim, Wes Hartley, and more (including some interesting collaborations). The [dog] and [pony] guys have a new episode up, this time featuring Jakob Battick + Friends. For more events this weekend, check the showlist. This weekend (specifically Saturday, September 12) is the PICNIC Music And Arts Festival in Lincoln Park here in Portland, Maine. The free event runs from 11am to 6pm and will feature an eclectic assortment of vendors and bands. [Note: I will be there with a table for Portland Pins and my photo work, as well as playing with my band, Marie Stella, at 2pm. Say hi!]. Following the all day event, there will be an afterparty at SPACE Gallery featuring two of the bands (Cotton Candy and Lorelei) from the Festival along with Death Vessel. Check out this post about Cotton Candy and another legendary DC-related band coming to SPACE, Chain And The Gang. For those of you who haven’t gotten your fill of the Beatles lately, between the reissues, the wildly popular PMF event this week, and the overload of promotion, Spencer Albee returns to cover band mode on Saturday night for his annual Beatles tribute show with the trusty School Spirit Mafia. This year they’ll be taking on the Magical Mystery Tour in its entirety. Here’s the quirky video reminder. |
