DoorYard Collective Multimedia Installation

As mentioned, the DoorYard Art Collective made a grand return to the monthly First Friday Art Walk in Portland with a full installation and open studio experience. If you’ve ever been to the DoorYard before (or Soundpost, or Stillhouse…) you may not recognize it these days, as it’s changed quite a bit. Check out the gallery after the jump for a glimpse of what the artists involved worked up for this occasion. Read on…

First Friday Art Walk! (Feat. The Return Of The Dooryard)

Sure, there are lots of galleries and art spaces in Portland, but for tonight’s First Friday Art Walk, why not head off the Congress Street path a bit and check out a couple less-conventional spots?

The DoorYard (108 High Street, at Spring) will be celebrating its first Open Studio/Art Walk exhibit in way too long. It’s a multimedia installation and from what I’ve heard from a few of the artists/collective members, it sounds pretty interesting. Plus, there will apparently be cookies.

Down at The Apohadion (107 Hanover Street), Your Future Landlords (Justin Woollard, Doug Milliken, and SK Green) will be showing “nearly 200 drunken, obscene, often offensive but always ridiculous cartoons.” There will also be some sort of musical/art/ridiculous performance.

For more wine-and-cheese types of art happenings tonight (and everything in between), peruse the FFAW listings. Bundle up.

The weekend is full of great events around town (and outside Portland as well) so find something fun. For Saturday night, I highly recommend helping our friend Knaughty Sarah celebrate her birthday at Geno’s (though the other options for the night are really awesome as well)!

At Sunday night’s show at Meg Perry Center in Portland, Lady Lamb The Beekeeper played what was supposedly their last show for a few months. The Brunwick/Old Orchard Beach duo plan to spend the next two or three months focusing on writing and recording new songs. It’s been a great streak for the band since we first talked about them in November, over which time they played at just about every venue around, packing just about every show. Also of note was Aly Spaltro’s show-stopping performance at the Dead Of Winter show at SPACE. With all they’ve had going on, the band could surely use a bit of a break. One exciting moment in the show came when we were treated to a new solo song by each member of the group (Aly and T.J.) – apparently both were so new that they just hadn’t worked on them enough together to perform them that way. Seeing the way they each approached their songs revealed much about what they both bring to the sound that band’s sound. Read on…
