Tonight’s show at Cameo Gallery (located in the back of the restaurant The Lovin’ Cup Cafe on N. 6th) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn has been in the works for a while and we couldn’t be more excited to present this one. Things start off with doors at 8pm and Brooklyn power garage pop band Weird Children, celebrating a new digital single, a new video, and their first trip to Austin next week. Following them will be Bangor, Maine’s own guitar-and-drums power duo, When Particles Collide, hot off recording a new album. Diehard step the rock factor up even more (by the way have you heard their excellent new covers EP?). Quiet Loudly emerge to close the night out in their usual epic manner.
Remember exactly a year ago when Girl Talk played the State and we all went and lost our minds in a pool of sweaty dancing? Well, the mashup mastermind sure has inspired a lot of movement, including a film featuring three improvisational dancers on an adventure through New York City that’s been getting a ton of great praise. Take two minutes and watch this trailer for the film Girl Walk // All Day and make some plans to get out on Saturday to catch the whole film at SPACE for its Maine premier.
The event opens at 8pm with the screening at 8:30pm (get there early if you want a seat, you know how this works) and a dance party to follow with DJs King Roomie Rock + CDR. Get tickets for $8 here. Have fun all day.
Bar Harbor band Coke Weed first came on our radar in the Fall, when we interviewed them and caught a show in Brooklyn, and now they’re prepping for the release of their second LP, Nice Dreams, to be released April 17. The record was produced (completely live in ten days with no overdubs!) by Nick Stumpf (formerly of French Kicks and producer of Caveman’s CoCo Beware) and makes good on Coke Weed’s previous hints of VU drones and psych rock jams. Download the first single, “Magpie,” now, and check out the video below.
Portland roots band This Way return from a 9-month break from local shows with a headlining gig this Saturday (2/25) at Empire. Have you seen their new stage yet? We haven’t but are curious to see how the venue changed things up – from what we heard a few months back the plan sounded very promising. Joining them will be Boston’s increasingly popular Americana act, Kingsley Flood, as well as one of Portland’s finest bluegrass bands, Tricky Britches. This Way teamed up with Jacob Perry of My Name Productions to craft this brand new video for their track, “Take It All (Or Leave It All Behind)”, shot in downtown Portland and Peaks Island. Check it out below.
Watch the video on Youtube, and download the band’s album, Goodbye Forever, for name-your-own-price at Bandcamp. Tickets to this weekend’s show are on sale now for $7.
These things just keep coming up faster and faster don’t they? Tomorrow it’s round 3 of HillyTown Presents shows at Union Hall in Brooklyn, NY. This time around we’ve got Portland garage noise band Great Western Plain sharing the fun with Shark? and Field Mouse (who’ve been getting some great press lately)! We must be on to something with this one, since even the New Yorker recommended the show. Continue reading HillyTown Presents NYC Tomorrow!
<a href=”http://aseverejoy.bandcamp.com/album/no-1-limited-edition-single” _mce_href=”http://aseverejoy.bandcamp.com/album/no-1-limited-edition-single”>No. 1 – (Limited Edition Single) by A Severe Joy</a>
Two masks, two duos, a dance contest, and flowers? Yup, sounds like a HillyTown Presents show. At least on Tuesday night at Union Hall in Brooklyn, NY it was. A Severe Joy came down from Maine to play a show along with locals Genghis Hans and Mitten, and Poingly kept things fun with jams at the DJ booth, including an impromptu performance of one of his own songs/dance contest. The grand prize was an iron. And that’s just how we do it.
We’re at it again. This Tuesday, A Severe Joy will be in Brooklyn to play one of our shows, this time with an emphasis on the electronic pop/dance genres. This one is going to be great. Flyer and info below:
Doors at 8:30, cover is just $7. Union Hall is at 702 Union Street in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklkyn, NY. Get advance tickets here! We currently have one more show at the venue, coming up on February 22, featuring Great Western Plain with Brooklyn locals Shark? and Field Mouse (who just premiered a new video on Stereogum).
Update: Congrats to our contest winner Dorson P. and thanks to everybody who entered! Enjoy the show!
OH HEY. We meant to do this when we posted the Brown Bird interview yesterday, but it got lost in the shuffle. Want to go to the show at SPACE on Friday? Email hello@hillytown.com with the subject line “Brown Bird!” to enter to win a pair of tickets to the show. Contest ends at Noon on Wednesday, January 25 and one randomly selected winner will be notified via email. Age restrictions for the show (18+) apply, and the winner’s name will be on the guest list at the door. Good luck!
Interview with David Lamb and MorganEve Swain (aka BrownBird) by Andrew Lapham Fersch
What has Brown Bird been up to in the past couple months?
David Lamb (DL): We returned home (to Warren, Rhode Island) in the middle of December from a two month tour. Most of which was opening for our friends The Devil Makes Three. We had an amazing time with them. [Check out the HillyTown photos from the PCMH stop on that tour]Continue reading Brown Bird Interview
Last night, HillyTown Presents landed in Brooklyn, New York. Portland’s Butcher Boy and their Boston-based tourmates The Cowboy Band joined Brooklyn locals The Goddamn Rattlesnake for an exciting night of music at Union Hall in Park Slope. We have two more shows coming up at the venue: 1/31 with A Severe Joy and 2/22 with Great Western Plain and more in the works at various venues in NY. Read on for photos from Thursday’s show below.
