Interview: Jakob Battick / Afraid

AFRAID-EMF

It’s been some time since we last heard anything from the usually prolific Jakob Battick. His last public performance was back in June, performing at Red Medicine’s farewell show with post-punk hybrid Captain Hollow (who have yet to release their long-delayed debut). And aside from a few odds-and-ends releases including a ghostly Primal Scream . . . → Read More: Interview: Jakob Battick / Afraid

Jakob Battick/Greg Jamie art show opening with Drab Pony & Endless Caverns

Who Jakob Battick/Greg Jamie art show opening with Drab Pony & Endless Caverns When Saturday, September 3, 2011 7:00pm – All Ages Where The Oak & The Ax (map) 140 Main Street, back alley Biddeford, ME, USA 04005

formerly Hogfarm Studios Annex!

Other Info”An extravaganza of many sorts, featuring the drawings and paintings of Mr.’s Greg Jamie (O’Death, Blood Warrior) and Jakob Battick (Jakob Battick & Friends, Captain Hollow, 1800s Sea Monster, Mt. Moon, blah blah blah) and the musical talents of Drab Pony (Jeremy Robinson of South China and his cohorts) and Endless Caverns (Matthew Lajoie of Herbcraft, Cursillistas, and Planets Around the Sun/White Light.) A crazed evening of bli…ssing/dooming-out and eccentric and raw visual works.

Among Mr. Battick-dude’s works in the show will be several of the IN THE BELLY OF THE WOLF pieces along with several older works never seen in public, all previously kept private and relegated to bullshit academic showings in undergrad hell. So, get ready folks, this is going to be a wild and kaleidoscopic showing of visions both hellish and charming.

Come out, drink some drinks. Enjoy the sure to be awesome one-time collaborative juices of ENDLESS PONY/DRAB CAVERNS (That’s right, a f*ckin’ terrific pseudo-surprise collabo set dudes and dudettes) and schmooze over some nice and wild drawrin’s and paintinz.

Much love. All ages. If you’re nice you can probably secure some artwork for a reasonable trade/price/swap/whatever. We want friends to come out and celebrate our art with us. And our music.”

White Light / Arborea / Jakob Battick & Friends / Pat Cunningham

Who White Light / Arborea / Jakob Battick & Friends / Pat Cunningham When Saturday, December 11, 2010 7:00pm – FREE – All Ages Where Mayo Street Arts (map) 10 Mayo Street Portland, ME, USA Other InfoWe’ve gone to great lengths to rent out Mayo Street Arts and make this event a totally FREE and ALL AGES showcase of some fine music for you folks.

Saturday, December 11th, in the gorgeous main hall of Mayo St. (Complete with delicious natural reverb) there will be free performances from Pat Cunningham, Jakob Battick & Friends, Arborea, and White Light. Also present will be a special L’Animaux Tryst merch table with tapes and rec…ords and knick-knacks, and a special selection of Arborea-curated merch from their friends and family.

A deluxe, hand-sewn, hand-printed CD of unreleased tracks from all four artists will be given free of charge to the first 20 attendees in the door that evening, featuring a total of 8 exclusive recordings (2 each from all 4 artists.) This is going to be a collector’s item for all you geeks out there.

Patric Cunningham (In Houses In Trees):
Bangor-based whispy woodsfolk with a dark undercurrent. Atypical chordings and structures, beautiful melodies and acoustic arrangements. Patric and one or two of his friends will be playing many of the 18 year old’s special songs, including some very very new and unreleased ones he’s recently written. Patric was a founding member of both Mt. Moon & 1800s Sea Monster, and his main cohort Ryan Higgins currently drums for Good Kids Sprouting Horns.

Jakob Battick & Friends:
New songs and new formations. The ever-changing nightmarefolk collective trims itself down to bare some new songs for its audience, all selections recently written to appear on the eventual release of the debut full length due out in 2011. Mysterysounds for your ears.

Arborea:
Wonder-duo Arborea will be summoning that ghostly timeless vibe they summon so well. Shanti has an incredible voice that will leave you speechless, Buck is a virtuosic folk-style guitar player, and the pair writes gorgeous ballads that seem to stand in the far shadows of various folk traditions. For those not in the know, Arborea has toured Europe, appeared live on the air at the BBC, released records on a handful of labels (Including Spanish imprint Borne Recordings), and has also been featured on NPR on multiple occasions (Gnarly credentials.)

White Light:
Local dronefolk legends from the L’Animaux Tryst family of weirdos. Ian Paige, Matt Lajoie, and Caitlin King (All also of Planets Around The Sun, Cursillistas, and Herbcraft) join forces with Jeremy and Jerusha Robinson (SOUTH CHINA!) to make sweeping songs that traverse the line between avant-anthems and searching, yearning, burning spiritual incantations. Electric guitars melt into cellos melting into primal boom-stomp drums melting into many voices.

This show has been made possible by the generous souls who subscribe to the Jakob Battick & Friends mailing list. Without their donations this show would be another paid-admission show with an ordinary attitude and ordinary expectations for the experience. Instead, we have a very special and exciting evening on our hands. Much love to all who have donated and who will donate, you will be justly rewarded with special gifts.
